Chapter 7
“SO THAT’S why I couldn’t get pregnant all those years! All those medications, all those injections, being mocked by relatives and friends for being a ‘barren hen‘… the problem was HIM all along!”
Harper completely broke down, sobbing like a child.
I took a sip of coffee and ordered security to leave her on the deck. Let her experience what it feels like to be a public spectacle as well…
James had just been beaten up. Despite his bruised face, he tried to help her up.
But Harper suddenly bit down hard on his wrist.
“Aaah!” James howled in pain.
He angrily shoved her away, shaking his hand frantically like a jumping monkey.
“Have you lost your mind? Why bite me? If it weren’t for your mess, would I have gotten beaten up?”
Tyler tried quietly to reason with her. “Aunt Harper, please get up. People are staring–it’s embarrassing.”
Harper had always harbored resentment toward Tyler. Now, learning the truth about her infertility,
years of bitterness exploded from her chest like a bomb.
She grabbed him and slapped him hard across the face.
“You little bastard! You’ve got that bitch’s blood in you, you cursed my baby–you’re the reason my baby died! Your entire family is garbage!”
“Now, your mom has other children, with a rich, handsome husband. She’ll never want you again!!”
Tyler was knocked to the ground by the slap, but seemed to hear only that I had another child. He sprang up instantly.
“You’re lying! Mom promised she’d only ever have me!”
“Why did you hit me? Why did you bite my dad?”
Like a furious lion cub, he launched himself at Harper, hitting wildly.
A crowd quickly gathered, pointing at the two rolling on the deck.
James’s face alternated between shades of red and white as he hurried to separate them.
Ignoring Harper, he grabbed Tyler’s hand and turned to leave.
Harper was beyond furious. She scrambled to her feet, clutched James’s arm, and laughed hysterically. “Do you know why I lost that baby?”

james pemed, taking the best. “Why?”
Harper laughed bitterly, her voice charp and sewn. “Vecause you’re defective! No wonder Claire left you. If I’d known, i wouldn’t have picked up your demeged gods ether Abs–4
Before she could finish, james’s hand cracked across her fare
Trembling with rage, he raised his foot to kick her. Tyler fearfully held him back
“Dad, the boat’s dorked, Let’s go
But before they could step away, police officers waiting on shore walked past them toward Harper,
Harper continued screaming hysterically while James never looked back.
All the security guards were fired. Those who had manhandled me were sued,
They begged and pleaded about having families to support.
The old me might have felt sorry for them, but after everything that happened, I realized that showing mercy to enemies is cruelty to yourself.
That was something Hudson had taught me.
Three months into our relationship, I was nearly in tears after being scammed by someone who deliberately caused a minor accident.
Hudson handled the situation, but I was about to let it go out of sympathy.
The usually mild tempered Hudson suddenly lost his temper,
He lectured me for half an hour.
One sentence particularly struck me:
“Claire, if you won’t fight to protect yourself, don’t blame others for walking all over you. That’s how the world works–survival of the fittest.”
I immediately saw things clearly and deeply reconsidered my past behavior.
At best, you could call it kindness; at worst, it was just weakness.
Always afraid, always considering everyone else’s feelings above my own.
The weakness I hadn’t discovered in twenty–some years, Hudson helped me spot in just three months.
