Chapter 5
Without removing her coat. Harper turned and jumped into the pool.
The freezing water soaked her skin, making her entire body shiver.
Harper slowly sank, overwhelming fear engulfing her, but she gritted her teeth and refused to call for help.
Soon, red blood spread through the pool.
The butler gasped in alarm: “Oh my God, she’s bleeding from the head!”
Finn removed his jacket and jumped into the pool to pull Harper out, shouting:
“Enough! Why are you so stubborn? Couldn’t you just walk away?”
Harper looked up, watching the diamond ring at the bottom of the pool, speaking coldly:
“You told me to make her happy, didn’t you? This should satisfy your precious Serena, right?”
Finn frowned, his refined face now terrifyingly dark:
“How many times have I told you, Serena is just a sister to me. The Smith family has significant standing in Riverside. If people learned what you’ve done, what would happen? Public opinion isn’t easy to manage these days. I asked you to comfort her and let her calm down–wasn’t that all for your own good?”
Finn spoke with deep feeling, as if everything was for her benefit.
But Harper couldn’t help but laugh bitterly as she listened.
He claimed public opinion was hard to manage?
Yet when the Cooper heir became paralyzed racing cars for Serena, wasn’t that also hushed up?
With Serena’s drama and bullying, and the Smith family’s poor reputation, hadn’t they still lived comfortably under Finn’s protection all these years?
Even their IVF attempt had been kept perfectly secret by him.
Now, even if she had been responsible for the kidnapping, suddenly he was concerned about public opinion?
The truth was, in Finn’s heart, she simply didn’t matter as much as Serena.
Harper no longer wanted to speak with Finn. She removed her soaked black coat and walked toward the living room.
After a few steps, perhaps from excessive blood loss, she suddenly collapsed.
Finn’s expression changed dramatically. He quickly strode toward Harper, about to lift her up when Serena suddenly crouched on the ground, crying pitifully:
Chapter 5
“Finn, my stomach hurts. Help me upstairs to lie down.”
Finn hesitated, withdrawing his hand that was about to lift Harper. He turned and picked up Serena instead.
He left Harper’s head to hit the ground hard, looking at the butler and leaving only one instruction-“Mr. Brown, take her to the hospital.”
When Harper regained consciousness, she met a pair of worried dark eyes.
Seeing her awake, Finn hurried to call the doctor. After confirming she was fine, he finally relaxed.
Harper noticed a new Buddhist bracelet on her left hand–it appeared to be the one Finn usually wore.
An assistant nearby explained with a smile:
“Mrs. Cooper, you were unconscious for so long that Mr. Cooper gave you the Buddhist bracelet he’s worn for over a decade. He even vowed before Buddha last night that if you woke up safely, he would become vegetarian for life and never touch alcohol or cigarettes again.”
Harper frowned, removing the bracelet from her wrist with some disgust and handing it back to Finn:
“Don’t change your habits for me.”
Finn didn’t take it, instead placing the bracelet back on her hand and speaking gently:
“Harper, didn’t you make similar vows during my disability?”
Harper’s heart trembled slightly.
In the second year of Finn’s disability, she heard that Hsi Lai Temple in Riverside was miraculous and took him there overnight to make a wish.
That day, before Buddha, she vowed, “I will give everything I have for Finn’s health.”
Finn also made a wish, promising to marry her in five years.
Seeing Finn’s handwritten wish slip, she had tears in her eyes, and Finn held her, comforting her for a long time.
That was one of the rare days when Finn only had eyes for her.
Ultimately, he only saw her when Serena wasn’t around.
Now that Serena was back, his attention would never focus on her again.
Harper looked at Finn’s expectant face and lowered her eyes:
“I’m tired.”
When she woke again, it was afternoon.
Harper wanted to ask the doctor when she could be discharged.
Chapter 5
Before pushing open the door, she heard Finn and Rebecca talking in the hallway.
“When are you planning to set the wedding date?” Rebecca’s curious voice rang out.
Finn lowered his eyes, saying casually, “I mentioned it to her before. I plan to hold the wedding at the end of the month.”
Rebecca nodded, instructing him:
“This wedding needs to be grand. Set a generous bride price–it can only be more, not less. Harper donated bone marrow to your precious Serena; we can’t shortchange her on the bride price.”
Remembering something. Rebecca changed the subject:
“It’s quite a coincidence. You’re getting married this month, and I heard our enemy–the Carters–is also having a wedding soon. The bride is also named Harper…”
