Julian wasn’t completely drunk. He’d heard Elise’s question but didn’t know how to answer.
He looked at the child still floating in formaldehyde on the table, pulling it into his arms.
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”
Julian’s “I’m sorry“-it wasn’t clear whether it was meant for the child or for Phoenix.
“Julian, let’s bury the child properly, okay?”
Elise came to Julian’s home, finding him still staring at the child in a daze.
Elise couldn’t even bear to look at it.
After a long silence, Julian nodded.
Julian bought a plot in the city’s most expensive cemetery for the child.
He refused help, personally placing the tiny urn inside.
The tombstone bore no photo or name of the child. Just a simple inscription: “Beloved child of Julian Blackwood & Phoenix Reed.”
After burying the child, Julian knelt before the tombstone, tracing Phoenix’s name.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Elise stood to the side, her eyes filled with disgust and impatience. But when Julian looked over, she quickly adopted a sorrowful expression.
“The poor child.”
Julian ignored Elise, walking past her.
Elise hurried after him, “Julian, you’re walking too fast. I can’t keep up.”
As she walked, Elise let out a sudden cry of pain.
Julian turned around, irritation evident on his face.
“Julian, my heel rubbed my foot raw.”

shoes!”
Elise stood frozen in disbelief.
“Julian, you were never like this before!”
Facing Elise’s accusation, Julian didn’t even flinch.
“Before was before. Elise, our relationship should have ended when you disappeared without a word.”
Hearing this, Elise panicked and ran to Julian, ignoring her painful foot.
“Julian, you’re just saying this to hurt me, right?”
She reached for his hand.
But Julian swiftly shook off her approaching hand.
“Elise, I love Phoenix. We’re done.”
Elise refused to believe him. “Julian, Phoenix is gone! Why can’t we be together? You still love me.”
Julian just responded with cold detachment.
“Elise, I’ve made up my mind. I did have feelings for you, but that was in the past. Helping you after your return was out of our history, not love. I love Phoenix and I want to be with her.”
Julian walked away without waiting for her reaction, heading down the mountain alone.
At that moment, Julian had only one thought in his mind: find Phoenix, apologize, and win her back.
