Chapter 11
Chapter 11
“Professor Reed asked me to show you around campus.”
Mason reached for Phoenix’s art portfolio, but she moved it away.
“That’s really kind of you, but if you’re busy, you don’t have to. I can manage.”
Phoenix politely declined Mason’s offer.
Mason noticed her resistance but took her portfolio anyway.
“My experiment just finished, and the next phase isn’t urgent. I have time to show you around campus.”
Seeing Mason’s eagerness, Phoenix assumed he was doing it as a favor to her father.
“I won’t say anything to my dad. If you’re busy, you don’t need to worry about me.”
Mason stopped walking and looked at Phoenix. “Why do you think I’m not doing this for you? Why wouldn’t I want to show you around campus?”
Phoenix didn’t understand what Mason meant, but followed him anyway.
Mason thoughtfully guided Phoenix through places art students frequently visited. When he noticed she was tired, he’d take her to coffee shops or rest on the lawn.
“I really appreciate your help today…”
Before Phoenix could finish, Mason suddenly shouted, “Watch out!”
It was a club activity day, and they happened to be near the skateboarding club.
Phoenix froze as she saw a runaway skateboard racing toward her.
Mason pulled Phoenix into his arms, using his back to shield her from the approaching collision.
The skateboarder apologized profusely to both of them.
Phoenix was about to ask if Mason was okay, but he beat her to it.
“Are you hurt?”
The genuine concern in Mason’s eyes puzzled Phoenix–why would he put himself in danger for her?
“I.. I’m fine. What about you?”
Mason sighed in relief hearing Phoenix was unharmed, but as he tried to lead her away, he winced in pain from his injured leg.
“Ouch!”
Hearing his sharp intake of breath, Phoenix quickly asked, “What’s wrong? Are you injured?”

Chapter 11
Mason’s leg had hit a nearby column, its sharp edge slicing open his calf.
Phoenix realized the apologetic skateboarder had disappeared, leaving her to tell Mason. “Let me take you to the hospital.
That looks serious.”
Mason wanted to say it was nothing, but seeing Phoenix’s concerned expression, he nodded instead.
“Thank you.”
Phoenix brought Mason to the campus medical center.
“It’s just a cut, not serious. No stitches needed. Just disinfect and bandage it, and it’ll be fine.” Mason reassured her, seeing her worried expression.
The doctor treating Mason’s wound joked, “Looks like a hero saving his damsel.”
Mason smiled without denying it, while Phoenix lowered her head in embarrassment.
“Just disinfect and change the bandage daily.”
Phoenix was about to pay, but Mason stopped her. “Need to use a school card, and you don’t have yours yet, so use mine.”
Phoenix took the card, still warm from Mason’s pocket, and went to pay.
The doctor watched Mason. “Is she your girlfriend?”
Mason smiled mischievously. “Not yet, but maybe in the future.”
After getting the medicine, Phoenix helped Mason outside, unable to resist asking,
“Why did you protect me?”
This was only their second meeting, after all.
Mason looked at Phoenix and said something puzzling:
“You really don’t remember me?”
Phoenix was confused. “What?”
Mason shook his head. “Nothing. I wanted to save you, so I did.”
Even after Mason limped away, Phoenix kept pondering his words.
“You really don’t remember me?”
She whispered these words to herself, unable to recall where she might have known Mason from.
