Chapter 7
Julianna’s composure crumbled. She covered her mouth, tears welling in her eyes, looking utterly aggrieved and vulnerable.
Nancy’s face hardened. She stood abruptly, her voice sharp.“How have you raised this child? He’s become utterly disrespectful!”
My mind was a whirlwind, I had no energy for a fight with Nancy. But for Kevin’s sake, I said, “He’s a child. Give him time.”
Nancy sneered.“Don’t think I don’t see your manipulative tactics, Gemma. We’re women. I see right through you!”
She called out, “Byron!”
Byron Whittier, the butler, hurried over.“What is it, Madam Farley?”
“Take Kevin. Don’t let this woman manipulate our family’s child!”
Byron, looking troubled, stepped forward and pulled Kevin from my arms. Kevin struggled, crying, “No! Let go! Mom, I want to go home with Mom…”
My brow furrowed. I couldn’t bear to see him cry.“Kevin has asthma. Stop forcing him.”
Nancy’s expression froze. Julianna, rising swiftly, placed a hand on Nancy’s arm. Her voice was choked with tears.“Nancy, please. Let him go. It’s my fault. I failed as a mother. He doesn’t accept me, and I deserve it.”
Nancy, concerned about Kevin’s asthma, sighed and waved at Byron, who released Kevin.
“Mom!”
Kevin flung himself at me, his small body colliding with my abdomen. A sharp pain shot through me, and I paled. The pain… intensifying.
