Chapter 17
Kevin’s even breathing was her answer.

It was vacation. No kindergarten for Kevin. The studio had a new commission–a high–paying job with a tight deadline. For two days, Kevin stayed with me at the studio. Simone and the others helped look after him when I was working. He’d become familiar with everyone over the past two years.
By 2 PM on the third day, I’d finished the repairs. I went to my office and messaged Brianelle, my best friend, a gynecologist.
Gemma: Free this afternoon?
Brianelle: Sure! What’s up?
Gemma: Doctor’s appointment. Around 3:30.
Brianelle: What’s wrong? Pregnant?
Gemma: Not sure. My period’s late by ten days. And my belly…
Brianelle: Ten days?! Pregnancy test?
I remembered the forgotten test. I pursed my lips, sighing. “I bought one, but got busy and forgot.”
Brianelle: You’re amazing! You forget what you buy! Working late again, huh? Gemma, I wouldn’t be surprised if you dropped dead in that repair room one day! Check it!
Gemma: Got it.

Back in the office, Kevin slept on the sofa, his blanket on the floor, an unfinished lunchbox on the table. I covered him with the blanket, tossed the lunchbox, and cleaned the table. I sat down, wiping the sweat from my brow. The discomfort in my belly returned. The pregnancy test… I was about to get it when Simone opened the door.
