Chapter 3
Knowing the truth after everything I had discovered yesterday, hearing Lincoln’s words only made my heart ache
even more.
“How can you swear such a cruel oath? Aren’t you afraid it might come true?” I asked, my voice laced with
bitterness,
Lincoln let out a low laugh, his eyes full of what seemed to be genuine affection as he looked at me.
“No, because no one knows better than I do how much I love you!” Lincoln said with conviction.
“If you don’t believe me, Laura, I’m willing to give you my entire life.”
He claimed he could give me his whole life, yet he couldn’t control his desires.
His body still carried the lingering scent of another woman, but his lips continued to weave the sweetest lies for me.
I lowered my head and chuckled softly, not responding further. “Alright.”
Lincoln let out a barely perceptible sigh of relief before quickly changing the subject.
“This afternoon, my mom wants us to visit the temple to pray and fulfill a vow.”
“And tonight, at my uncle Jasper’s engagement banquet, I have a surprise for you!”
How coincidental, Lincoln–I have a surprise for you tonight as well.
Two years ago, when Lincoln was in a coma after the car accident, I, a non–believer, dragged my barely–recovered body up ninety–nine steps, kneeling one by one, to pray for his safe recovery at the temple.
Today, returning to the same temple to fulfill that vow, I was surprised to find Rosemary there as well.
While drawing lots, seeing that no one was around, she batted her innocent eyes at me and smiled coyly.
“Laura, I came to pray for the baby in my belly. Did you come for the same reason?”
She looked so confident, as if she had already won, ready to take my place in Lincoln’s life.
Turning my head away, I tried to distance myself from her, but she suddenly stood up and grabbed my arm, lowering her voice to speak.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Laura. I forgot you can’t have children. I shouldn’t have brought it up.”
Watching her self–serving performance, I couldn’t help but find it a bit funny. But deep down, an ominous feeling stirred within me.
Sure enough, during the vegetarian meal, Lincoln’s mother brought up the topic of children again.

“Laura, when do you two plan to have kids after getting married?”
Ever since learning about my infertility, Lincoln’s mother had disliked me. Though she couldn’t openly oppose her son’s choice, she often hinted that I should consider IVF.
I didn’t expect that, just last night, Lincoln had already agreed to bring his illegitimate child into our lives, and today his mother was eagerly pushing for it to happen.
Lincoln immediately put down his chopsticks and retorted, “Mom, I’ve already said we’re not planning to have
kids!”
“If you keep pressuring us, we won’t come back here anymore.”
Hearing this, his mother looked ready to scold him for being unfilial, but I suddenly spoke up.
“Alright, let’s have one then,” I said.
“But I’m afraid of the pain of IVF. How about we adopt a child instead, Lincoln?”
As soon as those words left my mouth, everyone’s faces lit up with unconcealed delight.
Lincoln’s mother nodded repeatedly in agreement.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking. You two can go and adopt together when the time comes.”
“Starting from a young age, raising the child as the future heir wouldn’t be a bad idea!”
Her excited tone made it sound as if she already had a grandson in her arms.
Lincoln didn’t say much in response.
Although this was the outcome he had been hoping for, seeing how sensible and understanding Laura was being made him feel slightly uneasy, as if her understanding demeanor was somehow off.
On the way down the mountain, the weather took a turn for the worse.
Coupled with Lincoln’s distracted state, we hadn’t gone far before the car suddenly made a loud “bang” as it rear–ended another vehicle.
In an instant, the car spun in place before flipping over.
The horrifying memories of the car accident two years ago flooded my mind.
The airbag’s impact left me feeling dizzy, my body trembling uncontrollably.
