CHAPTER 63 This space between us
CHAPTER 63 – This space between us
ELIJAH’S POV
“I’m not going to push you to suddenly be okay with all this, I said, bringing her hands to my lips.
“I wouldn’t be mad at you if you did. I’m the one who kept pushing you to tell me the truth. To an extent, this is at my fault. should have been patient with you.”
“and I should have eased you into it. I simply just dumped it all on you at this point
“It’s okay. I’m glad I know the truth. It’s a bit of a relief if I’m being honest.”
I let out a breath and nodded.
“I should let you be so that you enjoy your breakfast. If you need me, just ring me up I pointed at her phone on the bedside table.
“I’ll do that.” she said as I began to rise, “And Elijah?”
“yeah?”
“thank you. For saving me.”
“It’s my sole purpose on this earth,” I said playfully, making her smile. But I meant it. I meant every word.
“she doing okay?” Jason asked when I left my room, which was also Kylie’s room at the moment.
“she’s handling it the best she can,” I told him, and looked toward my room, before leading Jason to the other room I had moved into since Kylie joined us.
“I believe you have something to say you would rather no one caught wind of,” he said when I closed the door behind us.
“spot on,” I said and began to pace, not sure how to begin. Jason just stood there, his expression patient and unwavering.
“I don’t know what to do.”
“Well, that’s a first.”
“Oh, come off it,” I said and waved off what he said. “What I’m trying to say is, I don’t know what to do about Kylie. I’m worried that this revelation was a bit too much for her.”
“she’s wanted it for so long though.”
“but she never truly did know what she was asking for. Now he knows, and I can see the fear in her eyes when she looks at me. Things are different now, Jason. This was everything I was trying to avoid. I can’t undo that now.”
“she’s going to be okay though. She’s a very strong woman. Plus, she’s been doing research on our kind for quite some time now. I’m pretty sure she’s had an inkling of what we are all this while.”
*She had never seen me shift before now though.”
“yeahh, that might have been a bit too much for her.”
I hit him with a glare, and he raised his hands in mock surrender.
“There’s also the fact that she’s still here. She might be scared and overwhelmed but she’s still here. That says bravery, regardless of how hard it might be for her. So just…. Give her some time.”
“time.” I said, thinking a bit, “And maybe space.” I said, feeling a bit depressed at the thought.
“I’m not sure giving her ‘space‘ is exactly what she needs at this time, Elijah.”
I looked up at him at the use of my name. He only said my name when we were like this, talking about personal things, and I sighed.
“how can she fully process the thoughts that she needs to process if I’m there every moment of the day, clouding her judgment.”
“She hasn’t said so, has she? She hasn’t called you out on clouding her judgment.”
“and she won’t. But I know that I will. I know that if I’m there at every point, she won’t…” I didn’t know what to say, so ! stopped talking.”
“she won’t what, Alpha?” Jason asked quietly.
“she won’t want to stay.”
“oh, bugger that.”
Successfully unlocked!
“no, I’m being serious, Jason. She might get more overwhelmed, and decide that this isn’t what she wants. What do I do
now?”

CHAPTER 63–This space between us
“Well, it’s a bit too late for her to decide this isn’t what she wants. For one thing, she might be just like us. Secondly, well…. she nearly well blew up your brains trying to get this information out of you. Now she knows, so she stays”
“I can’t force her,” I said, feeling somewhat defeated.
“you won’t have to. I’m sure a part of her knew what she was getting info. Why the hell would she want to get out so quickly?”
“because she can. And I think a part of me wants her to.”
“And to that, I say bugger it, as well.”
I didn’t go to her room after that morning. I asked Jason to go in my stead, and when she asked about me, he made excuses about how I needed to attend pack meetings and see the elders. His way of easing her into it, but my way of dodging her.
See, I was of the belief that she needed her time and her pace, while Jason was of the belief that she needed me. I stuck to my beliefs, and Jason did what he could with what he believed.
But by the fourth day, Jason had had enough.
“she’s asking for you,” he told me when he entered my room without knocking.
“Well, you can tell her that I have a meeting.”
“or you can tell me yourself,” she said, stepping away from behind Jason. She met me eye for eye, and she looked very pissed.
“kylie… “I turned to Jason for help, but he hit me with a mock salute and fled.
“How could you, Elijah?” she asked when it was just us two. I looked toward the door in hopes that I could escape too, but she closed the door behind me.
“Don’t even think about it,” she said angrily and walked toward me.
“Kylie..”
“You’ve been avoiding me,” she said and sounded defeated.
“I’ve been trying to give you the space I felt you needed.”
“I needed you, Elijah. Not space, not Jason, not the maids. You.”
“I…” I sighed, as I struggled for the right words, “I’m only going to cause you more harm than good.”
“That was the same thing you said when you hid your true nature from me, and look where that got us.”
“I don’t want to mess up your life Kylie,” I said, and heard my voice crack. Hell, why would my voice crack like that?
“I asked for this Elijah. No matter how crazy it turned out to be, I asked for this.”
“And I shielded you from it for as long as I could. And then, Alas, when I gave it to you, I dropped it on you. Why the hell would I do that?”
“I don’t know. But after it was all said and done, was dodging me the only way to go when things went south?”
“I didn’t know what else to do.” she reached out and took my hands in hers.
“I should be the one avoiding you, are you aware?“I am. Why haven’t you?” because I don’t want to. Because I care more about you, and this than just myself.”
“That’s risky, Kylie.“maybe. But like you said, your sole purpose is to keep me safe, and if I know anything, it’s that you take your purpose quite seriously.”
