CHAPTER 57 Imagine a life without…
KYLIE’S POV
“That is your final word?” Hannah asked, and some of her earlier calm and sweet exterior had been chipped away
Her true colors were showing, her mask was slipping away.
“You heard me the first time,” I said, and set aside my bottle of water.
“Did you not hear me the first time? I said it would help the family financially if you did this”
“Oh, I heard you mother. The problem is, you didn’t listen to me. So I’ll try again. I don’t care about the finances of your family. I say “your family” because you all kicked me out and left me to fend for myself. So, why do I have to care so much about what you all choose to do after what you did to me? Why should I care what happens next?”
“Because you owe us.” She spat and I scoffed.”
“Every penny I was given, came with spite and ridicule. I truly doubt I owe you anything at this point. But if you what repayment, give me a couple of years, I’m sure I can be able to pay for taking up space in your home”
“You, ingrate.”
“That’s enough,” Elijah said, looking very irritated with the situation, and we all turned to look at him.
“This is a family business. It does not concern you.”
“Family? This is how you treat family. Then I’m scared to find out how you treat your enemies.”
“Elijah,” I said wearily.
“Kylie, don’t do that. She’s right here trying to make a mess of you and do you expect me to just stand still?”
“I expect you to let me handle this by myself. This isn’t any of your concern.”
“I’m glad we are both thinking alike for once.” My mother said and I shook my head at her.
“I’m done letting this be any of my concerns either. I’m done here, mother, I’m not doing it, and I’m not changing my mind, no matter how much you push and press.
“You’re insolent.”
”
“I’ve had you say worse. This doesn’t hurt as much. Please, leave. I’ve had enough.”
She rose from where she sat, looking all angry and entitled.
“I didn’t make the wrong choice by sending you out of the house. You’ve been nothing but ungrateful.”
“No, you didn’t make the wrong choice at all. If anything, you taught me to stand on my own. I guess I can be grateful for that.”
She looked at me for a long time, before she simply scoffed and then she walked out of my apartment that she made seem like it was beneath her.
I let out a deep relieved breath when she left the house and turned to Elijah. He looked like he had a whole lot to say, but I shook my head.
“You should not have butted in like that.”
“So what? I should have just stood there and let her have a go at you?”
“I’m used to it, and I’m well able to handle myself, especially when it comes to Hannah.”
“You don’t expect me to just be still when I’m right here, seeing that you are in distress.”
“I was not in distress, neither was I helpless, and I think you should leave.”
“What?” He asked, looking like I just slapped him in the face.
But I needed a moment to order my thoughts.
And although I did my best to hide it, I was not okay.
“I need you to leave, Elijah. I don’t need you to be here playing hero for me. I can take care of myself.”
“No matter what I do, Kylie… no matter what I do, I’m still not enough for you?”
“Did I say that? Have I said anything along those lines?”
“But that’s exactly how it is. And you know what, from here on, I respect that.”
“Elijah…” I began, and he rose up both his hands, leaving me disarmed.
“I respect that. “he repeated, and turned to leave.

I waited till he left, before I let out a long slow sigh, then I placed a hand over my heart till I felt a bit more still
“There” I sighed when the world inside of me slowed a bit “There”
ELIJAH POV
I angrily kicked the first trash can I saw and watched with satisfaction as it landed several feet from where I stood.
I was just so angry with Kylie. Couldn’t she see how hard I tried?
But somehow, no matter what I did, I still was not enough, unless I was telling her what she needed to know about my werewolf side. Meanwhile, the only reason why I was not telling her anything was because I wanted to keep her safe. “Damn it, Kylie “I found myself swearing, but then, I couldn’t help but wonder if things would not have been much better if I didn’t have to deal with the bond between us. After all, everything was incredibly heightened because of our bond. But if we subtracted it, if we weren’t bound to each other, then maybe all of this would be a whole lot more bearable. “Don’t tell me you’re considering what I think you’re considering?” My wolf Fio asked and sighed.
“Ending my bond with Kylie? Yeah, it’s not looking like such a bad idea right now.”
Because of one Little misunderstanding?”
“One little misunderstanding? She won’t even trust me anymore. She’s so hell–bent on knowing about us, and the more she tries to know, the more she endangers herself. And to be honest, I have had my spoon full of her attitude.”
She didn’t trust me anymore and wanted space. Fine, then that’s what I was going to give to her. Because in the end, what was the point of fighting for someone that was not fighting for you right back?
“You took your fine time out there.” Jason, my Beta said when I got home.
“Not in the mood right now,” I told him. I considered alcohol, simply losing myself in it, but I figured that I needed a clear head for the decisions I needed to make.
“What’s got your buttocks in a twist?”
“More like who,” I said as I sat across from him while he clicked away on his iPad.
“More like who,” I said with a sneer.
“Kylie?” He asked with a weak smile and I just pressed a hand to my eyes.
Just the very mention of her name had me feeling all angry and agitated again.
“All I do is try to be there for her. Even when she asks questions that I can’t give her the answers to right now, all I do is try to be there for her. But is that enough? No. Instead, she wants the very things that are bad for her.”
“Things like what?” Jason asked, not looking up from his iPad. As though my dilemma was inconsequential.
“Like wanting to know more about us. What does she need that for?” I asked out loud, still very unclear on the whole thing. “Clarity, to feel safe. Who knows?”
“What?” I questioned and only then did he look at me.
“She probably needs you to tell her the truth, so she can feel safe. And when you think about it, she’s not wrong to want that. Alpha, I don’t know if you’ve considered it, but the longer you keep her from knowing about you, the longer the chances are of something happening to her. I don’t understand that you want to keep her safe, but what happens when your plans to keep her safe only end up endangering her.”
I looked at him for a long time, wondering what cock and bull he was spitting before shaking my head.
“You don’t know Kylie like her do. If she knows a little, she is only going to want to know a whole lot more. She’ll go to the extremes, she’ll hurt herself. I’m only trying to keep her from that. But what does she do? Push me away like I’m the problem.”
“You are the problem.” My wolf, Fio said in exasperation. He was tired of the constant animosity between
“What did you say?”
and me.
“I said you’re the problem. You’re trying to protect Kylie. But protecting her from what though? From what is already within her?”
