CHAPTER 53 – Closer to the Truth
ELIJAH’S POV
I found him outside his apartment and just stood to watch him. He was on a call with heaven knew who and I wondered if he was speaking to Kylie. The smile on his face told me it wasn’t impossible, and that only added to my vexation.
I balled my hands in fists and made my way toward him. He turned before I reached him and had a look of surprise before it cleared and he looked at me with a bit of annoyance.
“I don’t know how you found me here, but to an extent, I am not surprised to find you here.”
“Why would you be? When you’re hell–bent on taking my woman from me.”
“your woman?”
“Kylie.” I said from grinded teeth.
“Kylie. I see.” He said and smiled, “The last time I checked, Kylie was single.” Matthew said and ran a hand over his head.
“She told you that? She told you she was single?” Because I happened to overhear them while he was having a good time feeding her chips. She had not directly said she was single.
“Look man, I respect you, being a good quarterback and all. But Kylie has a mind of her own, if she agreed on a date with me, it’s because she wanted to. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. I’m not trying to take any woman away from you.”
“Then do us all a favour and leave her alone. Don’t confuse her, try not to take advantage of whatever may be wrong with us.”
“Did she tell you that? That I was taking advantage?”
“She doesn’t have to. It’s clear to me as daylight.”
“Clear to you as daylight.” He scoffed and shook his head, “look man, it’s been a very long day, and I really would like a shower and my mind. So I’m going to have to bid you goodnight. And please, stay away from me.”
“I’m only going to say this once. Just once. You stay away from Kylie.”
“or else?”
I took a step closer, “you don’t want to find out what could come next.”
“I’m terrified,” he said, not backing down. I had to hand it to him, he was courageous. Or maybe he was just plain dumb.
“Oh.” I said, and took a step back, “You should be.”
I decided that wasn’t the time for fistfights. But I had given a warning, and he would be wise to heed to it.
Saying nothing else, I turned away from him, and kept walking, before I lost my self–control and did indeed hit him for wanting Kylie.
My beta was in my living room waiting for me when I got home and eyed him carefully.
“What do you want?” I asked and headed straight for the bar, where I got a glass of wine.
“gee, it’s so good to see you too.” he drawled out when I handed him a glass.
“I’m not in a good mood. I just got back from spending a whole day stalking Kylie while with some other bloke.”
“Wow, that’s rough.”
“He even kissed her,” I said, scrunching up my face as the memory of it flashed in my inner eye. It wasn’t a very fine memory to have.
“gross.” he replied, and shook his head, “but then, what made you follow them anyway?”
“I went to see her, saw her walking looking all good, and decided to follow her instead. Eventually, all my stalking ended up in a park. She had a good time.” I said and drank from my wine. The thought of Kylie having a good time with someone else was doing a number on me.
“I can’t really say for sure if that is love or obsession, but I’m sorry for whatever the sight of all of that might have done to you.”
“Sorrier yet will be the bloke if he doesn’t heed my warning.”
“you threatened the guy?”
“I did. And I’m going to do a whole lot worse if he pushes me.” I said angrily and shook my head.
“Alright then, but try to calm yourself, because I came here with some information,” he said to me and I turned to him to give him my attention.
“About what?”

“about Kylie.”
“I see.” I said, and set my glass aside, “Let’s have it then.”
“I’ve been doing a bit of following myself. Nothing as serious as what you did today, but just to know about her, especially since you called about her bracelet. And while I haven’t exactly found out more about the meaning of the bracelet, I do know that she’s been doing a lot of research about our kind.”
“research? What kind of research? Actively searches on the internet about wolves, going to the local library far away from the university campus to search out books on werewolves, and as many super nat als as she can find. She’s doing a lot of digging, Alpha.”
“So it’s only a matter of time until she finds what she is looking for,” I said with some realization.
“Exactly.”
“So if I were you, I would worry less about who she is going out to the park with, and more about what she may or may not know about our kind. Possibly her kin too, if that bracelet is any indication.”
KYLIE’S POV
“I really wish you wouldn’t spend so much time completing this project. At least not so late at night.” the sculpture that had taken the role of my bodyguard said to me later one weekday evening. I checked the time, 9:00 pm and I sighed. “you’re right, but now is the only time I can do this, seeing as I have to attend classes during the day.” but I was already packing up my things to leave.
“You know there are a lot of weird things going on on campus right now. You shouldn’t let yourself get into any kind of casualty.”
“yeah. You have a point.”
“more than just a point,” he said as he followed me out of the door of the lab. The hallways were quiet, but I was already used to all of it. And I guess having the sculpture around definitely made things better.
Outside was quiet, no sound could be heard, except for the rustling of leaves and the distant call of an owl. Just a typical night back from the lab, and all was well until I was close to my apartment building, and I began to hear footsteps. The sound intensified, like two pairs of feet thudding hard against the ground, and turned in confusion as to where the sound came from.
I gasped when I caught sight of two bodies colliding, struggling, and coming apart, somewhere deep in the woods. It was dark, so they were more or less shadows fighting, but it seemed all too real, all too scary.
“What the hell?” I questioned, somewhat stuck to the ground where I stood.
“fighting, they are fighting, and you should really go inside.”
But I couldn’t, because at that moment, when the two human figures came apart, two figures came together, and they weren’t humans, they were beasts.
