Chapter 41 – My ex saved the day
KYLIE’s POV
I have no idea how long I was out, but I woke up to someone shaking me gently and calling my name.
“Come on, Kylie, please wake up.” The person’s voice was both familiar and distant. Like as though they were at one end of the room while I was at the other end. I tried to respond, but I couldn’t speak. I cogn’t speak!
And I began to panic.
“Kylie. Kylie, do you hear me?” The voice felt closer and closer until I felt the breath of its owner over my face.
I moaned as I opened my eyes, my body aching all over, and was shocked to find Justin looking over me with worry. “Justin,” I said with a croaky voice that didn’t really sound like mine. But at least I could speak now.
“Kylie.” He said, and sounded truly relieved, “I was so scared.”
“Justin, what happened? How are you here?” I asked and tried to sit up, but the effort was too much for me and I found myself falling into his embrace.
“Take it easy. How do you feel?”
I pressed a hand to my head. How did I feel? I felt like I had been run over by a truck. And the crazy part was that I didn’t even remember how I got there.
“Everything is just so fuzzy and painful right now.” I drawled.
“Well, that’s understandable. You were out cold.”
“I was- yes!” I shrieked as it all came back to me. The dinner date with Matthew, going to the bar with my friends, the drunk man at the bar.
“You remember?” He asked with concern and my eyes shut up to him. “Yes, Justin. It’s all coming back to me.” I said and he seemed troubled.
“Just take it easy.” He said softly. But I didn’t feel very easy anymore.
“Where is he?!” I asked, feeling very upset, “Where is that son of a gun that attacked me?” I asked with annoyance and tried to get up again.
“Kylie, take it easy.” He said, but I was getting up and I was scanning the bathroom
For the rat of a man, even though I was struggling a bit with standing on my two feet.
“Kylie, he’s gone.”
“Gone? You made him leave?”
“I asked him to. He was going to –” his words fell short, but I knew what he was going to say. That drunk man was going to rape me. I had seen it in his eyes, I had felt it in his touch.
“You saved me,” I said in surprise and he nodded slowly.
“Thank you,” I said sincerely.
“You’re welcome. But I can see it In your eyes that, Kylie. You’re pissed.”
“Justin, that man put his hands on me when I felt vulnerable. I’m beyond pissed. I’m angry.” I still felt vulnerable, but I was too angry to think things through.
“I understand, Ky. I perfectly understand. But you see that man? He isn’t just anybody. He is kind of a big deal around here. You do not want to be messing around when it comes to him.”
“I see. And how do you know what he is and his social standing?” I asked curiously and he shrugged like he knew nothing. But I knew him and so I knew that shrug said there was more.
“Word gets around.”
“Oh well. I’m too royally pissed to care right now.”
“Let me take you home.” He reached out to place his hands on my waist like he used to when we were dating but inside steeped him.
“Don’t do that.”
“Ky-”
“Justin, I’m serious.”
“You’re angry. Let me help you, ky. I’m really worried.”

“Yes, I am angry. But I’m also serious about not wanting to be touched by you. I’m grateful you were here today, but don’t take advantage of that for your interest.”
“I’m not doing that. I’m not using your circumstance to my advantage.”
“Okay then. Let’s keep things that way. I don’t want to sound like an ingrate, but please stay away from me. You laid your bed when you chose to sleep with Lisa. I beg you to please lay in it.” I said and started to reach for the door, but he grabbed me by my hand and drew me toward him.
“Fine then.” He said, our faces inches apart. We have not been this close in such along time. A wonder that being this close to home once did wild things so my heart, now I just looked at him like he was out of his damn mind.
“Let me go, Justin.”
“I will. But first, you have to promise that you won’t go after that man, Kylie.”
“Why?”
“Because he is dangerous. He can really hurt you.”
“Let me go. I’m not making any promises I can’t keep.”
He sighed like he was tired of my stubbornness, but he did let me go.
“Please. Kylie.” Justin said, seeming troubled.
Perhaps if the situation was different, if that man had not put his hands on me the way he had, I might have considered letting go.
But I couldn’t simply think back on what had almost happened, what might have happened had Justin not shown up and
Not feel all my anger.
“I’m sorry, Justin,” I said as I rose to my full height. I didn’t feel strong enough, the alcohol still made me sway, but my vexation gave me strength, and my trauma gave me
Purpose.
I left the bathroom and went out to the bar. I didn’t bother to look for my friends, I didn’t even know if they had left the bar, but right then I didn’t care. I scanned the counter for the man and I’m a whim, went out to look for him.
I found him outside, bent over some bushes as he threw up.
I fought the urge to throw a rock at him. But on second thought, I did pick up a rock, aimed for his leg, and threw it.
He howled in pain as he looked for the source of his agony.
“Doesn’t feel great, does it?” I asked when he spotted me and his face darkened.
“You!”
“Me,” I said and stood my ground. I had a few more rocks in my hand. And I really did feel like David with Goliath right then.
“You’re going to regret not leaving when you had the chance.” He was mere inches from me when I threw another rock at his legs. And he jumped in pain.
“Next one goes to your head. Or maybe your balls. Since you have no self–control.”
“Damned wretched girl.” He made to grab at me and I stepped backward as I got ready to toss another rock. But Justin appeared out of nowhere and tackled him so that they both landed on the ground.
“Leave her alone!” Justin roared, but the man tossed Justin off him. I watched with a racing heart as they both struggled to stand.
“She came at me!” The drunk man shouted and Justin looked at me with an expression that said “Seriously?”
I don’t know what he expected from me. The man had tried to rape me.
“Well, you tried to rape her! Just. Just leave her alone, okay? I’ll take her with me.”
“No.”
“No?” Both Justin and I asked in unison.
“No. Because I’m not letting her go. I’ve got dibs.”
Disgust rose up in my throat like bile and I consider really throwing another rock.
“You’re going to get her angry.”
“She’s hot when she’s angry.”
Did this man know that all it took was one stone??
“Shut up.” Justin said and pressed a hand to his brows, “Look, just let me take her. You’ll never have to deal with her again.”
“Why would I do that?” The man asked defiantly.

“Because I’m Justin Crawford and I’m guessing the Crawford name accounts for something”
“Well, you stand corrected, because that girl is mine. I couldn’t care less about you or what your name is. To me, you’re nothing but a scrawny bastard.”
