CHAPTER 40 – An encounter with a drunk stranger
CHAPTER 40- An encounter with a drunk stranger
KYLIE’S POV
“That’s not a bad idea,” Matthew said good–naturedly and I nearly groaned. Was this a date or a get–together? I wondered as a bad temper brewed.
“Great,” Justin said and took his seat like he didn’t just ruin a perfectly good dinner
Matthew and Justin ended up discussing football, while I sat there, wondering what I was even doing there at that point, 1 was already struggling to have a good time while it was just Matthew and I, and then Justin had to tag along like he was meant to be there. Suddenly, I no longer wanted to be seated there. I felt suffocated, I had no input in whatever they discussed and I longed for the mercy of my bed.
“Matthew,” I said and tried to sound good–natured, “thank you for a wonderful dinner,” I didn’t lie there, because even though I struggled I did have a good time, while it was just he and I, “but I think I’m ready to call it a night?
“Oh,” Matthew said and looked at a loss. As though he suddenly realized that maybe allowing Justin at our table wasn’t the best decision. But the decision had been made and it was too late to go back on it.
“Yeah, let me just pay so I can walk you home.” He said, but I shook my head as I began to rise.
“That won’t be necessary,” I said and offered a genuine smile as I rose. The both of you are having a good flow, don’t let me ruin that.”
He rose too, but I placed a hand on his shoulder.
“I’ll be fine,” I said, grabbed my bag quickly, and went on my way before either of them
Stopped me.
As I got close to the apartment building, I met Jessica on her way out.
“Look at her!” She squealed excitedly and I offered her a weak smile.
“How was the date?” She asked, looping her arms through mine and I shook my head.
“Don’t call it that. It wasn’t a date.”
“So what do you want to call it?”
“A dinner.” I said and shrugged, “A nice dinner between two good friends.”
Matthew was attractive and all, but right then, I couldn’t bring myself to see him as anything more than my friend. Jessica rolled her eyes at me, “So where is our dinner partner right now?”
“Probably still at the restaurant.” And Jessica’s eyes popped open.
“What?!” She laughed and shook my head.
“I didn’t want to be there anymore,” I said, opting to leave out the part where Justin decided to be our third wheel. “Well,” Jessica checked the time on her phone, “the night is still young. A couple of us are going to a bar. Are you interested?”
I looked at the building with a long–suffering look. Did I really want to be alone right then?
“I’m in,” I said with a sigh. I didn’t want to be on my right then. All I would do was think about Elijah. At least, at the bar, there would be music drowning out my thoughts and I wouldn’t have to deal with Elijah or Matthew.
“Great, let’s go!” Jessica squealed and dragged me along.
At the bar, Jessica and some friends went to the dance floor, leaving me alone to nurse a bottle. It’s okay, I asked to be left out this time.
I was a bit buzzed anyway.
“Hello, sweetheart.” Drawled a male voice.
and I looked up from my drink to find a man looking at me with bright eyes and a lopsided smile.
Yeah, he was buzzed too.
“Hello,” I said, smiling tightly, in hopes that it would make him leave me alone.
But he didn’t get the message. Instead, he took a seat beside me and ordered another drink.
“You from around here?” he asked and I nodded.
“Somewhat,” I said, deciding not to expand further. It wasn’t his business to start with.
“Hey, tell you what,” he began and reached for my wrist,” how about you tell me more about you over a dance.”

I tugged my hand free from his grip
“How about you leave me the hell stone?” I said, done with trying to be pote
“Hey, watch your tongue”
“Leave me alone, I said and got up quickly, only to feel a stitch in my side
I grabbed my side in shock. Had I hit myself somewhere, or was it that i rose too quickly?
“You don’t look so good, sweetheart.” The drunk man said, but I ignored him
“Do you need help?” He asked, reaching out to touch me, but I slapped his hand away from the
“I told you to leave me alone.” I said with some effort.
“Knock yourself out then.” He said, and got up to leave. I was thankful when he left and waited until the pan subredes before sitting right back. I truly hoped he wouldn’t come back.
My friends were still dancing, so I decided that another glass wouldn’t hurt. At least, so far, I had managed to keep myy thoughts right. Even though the ones I was avoiding were just being suppressed.
I hadn’t even finished that last glass before the first wave of nausea hit me.
“Bloody lightweight. “I swore at myself and rose when the second wave hit me and dragged myself to the bathroom before I lost all the contents of my stomach on the bar counter.
I made it just in time to throw up. Maybe I should not have had all those drinks.
“Too late to cry now.” I said to myself and groaned as I threw up again. I was going to have to remember this the next time had a terrible night and needed some kind of reprieve.
I was already feeling weak but managed to wash up and turned to leave. I was going to have to beg Jessica to take me
home.
But just as I reached for the door, the door burst open and I was pinned to the wall.
“What the hell?!” I cried in pain, from the impact with the wall, as well as the earlier pain I felt in my side.
“I told you to watch your tongue, did I not?” The familiar voice drawled and through my fading eye sight i saw it was the man from the bar.
“Stop, please,” I said as he pressed his hand to my jugular, cutting off my air.
“I don’t think so!” He said and threw me to the ground.
My vision blurred and the bang was lethal.
“No…” I heard myself as the man drew closer. He bent over me and reached beneath my dress. I tried to move but couldn’t myself to do anything. I was too weak and consumed by pain.
“You and I are going to have a good time together.” I heard him say, but I was blacking out, and I was thankful for it. At least, I wouldn’t have to feel anything.
But as I got dragged under, I heard a feral growl and felt the weight of the drunk man off me.
And then, it all went black.
