I almost laughed from rage.
Barbara was furious with herself for raising such a blind, heartless son. She smacked Axel hard across the back of his head.
“What the hell has Ember done? She’s lying in a hospital bed, for God’s sake!”
“You attack her without knowing a damn thing, and do you even realize she just lost your baby? Her body is completely weak right now!”
Before Axel could respond, he just stared at me in confusion.
Layla, however, couldn’t stay quiet.
“What? A miscarriage?”
“Ember had a miscarriage? This is all my fault. If I hadn’t gotten this illness, she wouldn’t be suffering like this…”
Her eyes instantly welled up with tears on cue.
I had to admire Layla’s acting skills.
If those overpaid A–list celebrities had half her talent, Netflix wouldn’t be filled with such terrible shows.
But some men just can’t resist a woman who seems to need protecting.
I wasn’t surprised to see Axel falling for it again.
Completely ignoring my feelings, he started comforting Layla instead.
“How could this possibly be your fault? The miscarriage happened because she wasn’t careful enough.”
“Besides, if she hadn’t caused your depression in the first place, you wouldn’t keep trying to hurt yourself. Let’s be honest–this outcome is entirely her own doing!”
Chapter 6
I let out a cold laugh, having almost forgotten this ridiculous claim.
In my previous life, Axel said he’d read in Layla’s diary that I caused her depression. I could never understand how I supposedly caused depression in someone I didn’t even know before dating Axel.
Hearing my laugh, Axel frowned and approached my bed with an air of condescension.
“Look, you did suffer a little this time, but why make such a big deal? You owe Layla
anyway.”
“So you lost the baby? Just have another one later. Why did you drag me here?”
I gently flexed my wrist. “Axel, could you come closer?”
“I need to talk to you about something.”
Axel gave me a confused look, then slowly leaned in.
As his face came closer to mine, I summoned every ounce of strength I had left and slapped
him hard across the face.
CRACK!
After the sharp sound of the slap, the hospital room fell completely silent.
Axel’s face was knocked sideways from the impact. He stared at me in total disbelief.
He never imagined I would treat him with such disrespect.
After staring at each other for a moment, Axel’s pupils trembled slightly.
The love and hope that once filled my eyes when I looked at him had completely vanished.
Now I looked at him as if he were a total stranger..
“Axel, we’re done!”
