Because of Layla’s fatal fall, all of us witnesses were questioned by the police.
After learning she had deliberately threatened to jump, the detectives investigated her
medical records.
The results were revealing: Layla had no mental health conditions whatsoever.
Her depression had been a complete fabrication.
Axel was devastated. He showed the police his phone with records of all the times Layla
had threatened suicide.
“If she wasn’t depressed, you’re saying all of this was fake?” he asked, voice hollow.
The officer simply nodded.
From the statements given by Barbara and me, the police pieced together the relationships
between everyone involved.
If Axel hadn’t behaved so abhorrently, they might have felt some sympathy for him being
manipulated.
But now? He was getting exactly what he deserved.
Since there were no security cameras in the hospital room, Axel couldn’t prove his
innocence.
Layla’s parents hounded him relentlessly, even demanding half a million dollars in compensation.
The two families were locked in bitter legal battles for months.
By the time Axel finally sorted through the mess, I had quietly checked myself out of the hospital.
When he called, I was already on a train leaving town.

“Ember, where are you?” His voice sounded desperate.
Looking out at the passing landscape, I replied coldly: “Why should that matter to you?”
“Axel, we’re done.”
His voice grew frantic: “No, please don’t do this. Ember, give me one more chance! We’ve been together for five years and were about to get married. Ember, please, don’t leave me!”
I laughed bitterly.
“Drop the act. If you were truly that devoted, where was all this concern when you were screwing Layla? Did you forget I was pregnant? That we’d been together five years and
were about to get married?”
“Besides, you think causing my miscarriage was your only crime? I could have died that day if I’d been slightly less lucky.”
“What makes you think I could ever forgive you?”
“Axel, I already told you–I don’t recycle trash like you.”
“Especially when in my previous life, I already paid with my blood because of you!”
