Fuck.
I listened to know if she was in the bathroom. But it was calm and quiet.
I stood up so fast the blood rushed to my head.
“Fuck, Mine! Don’t do anything stupid, please,” I muttered under my breath as I slid into my shorts. I didn’t even bother with
boxers.
I yanked on a loose black shirt, grabbed my keys from the dresser, and hurried out of my room.
I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and I looked like a mess. But who cares?
“I feel her, Kes. She isn’t far,” Zeth said, and I barely even registered what he said.
Good. Fucking good.
“She better not be,” I growled, storming toward the stairs, heart punching against my ribs. “We’ll catch up. We have to.”
My rage was simmering, crawling up my throat like acid.
If one of those guards–if even one of those useless, limp–dicked guards–had let her slip out, I’d gut them before they could explain.
I was halfway down the staircase when my ears picked up some sounds from outside, and I froze.
I reached the end of the staircase, slowing down my steps as the sounds from outside grew clearer.
I heard male voices… they were laughing.
And then I heard hers.
Kasmine’s.
She was laughing with warmth and joy.
My jaw clenched, muscles locking tight.
Without thinking, I stalked to the front door, my heart drumming a confused, jealous rhythm in my chest, and yanked it open.
The early noon light spilled in, and so did the scene I hadn’t expected to see.
Kasmine was standing at the edge of the compound, her long shirt falling to mid–thigh, barefoot, beautiful skin glowing.
In her hands were plastic bags–the bags of food I bought her last night when she said her appetite was a mess.
She was handing it out to the guards one by one, smiling, laughing, and even playfully swatting at one who lacked a joke.
And those fuckers–those same men I was about to slaughter any second–were grinning like idiots, talking to her like she was one of the boys, or worse like she belonged to them.
My vision blurred. The blood in my veins ran ice cold, then boiled all at once.

I felt the blood drain from my face, my throat suddenly too dry.
My voice came out before I event thought. “Kasmine?”
Her laughter died.
The guards froze, expressions flipping from amused to shit–scared. One of them dropped a meat pie mid–bite. Another shuffled backward so fast he nearly tripped over his own feet.
Kasmine turned.
Eyes met mine and she still maintained her radiant smile.
“Oh. You’re up alfeady?” She asked.
“Meet me inside,” I said calmly, so she doesn’t freak out.
She blinked, “Wait… Why? I’m just…”
“Now, baby,” I didn’t let her finish.
She didn’t argue again.
She passed the last food container to the nearest guard and muttered something to them before walking toward me.
I didn’t spare the guards a glance.
They knew better than to greet me now. Hell, even Zeth inside me went silent.
I stepped aside to let her in and shut the door behind us with more force than necessary.
I turned to her, and she blinked up at me as if she was about to ask what was wrong. But I didn’t let her get the words out.
I yanked her into me, wrapping my arms tight around her slender frame. My face buried in her hair, my hand splayed between her shoulder blades, gripping like I was anchoring myself to her.
“Fuck,” I breathed, with my voice shaking. “I thought you left.”
She stiffened for a second before slowly and hesitantly letting her arms circle my waist, leaning into me. I felt her heartbeat against
mine.
“You thought I left?” she whispered, sounding almost confused.
“I woke up, and you were gone. And I…” I shook my head, still clinging to her. “I don’t know what the fuck happened to me, but I panicked, Mine. Like–really fucking panicked.”
I let out a shaky breath and pulled back just enough to look down at her. Her brows were drawn togethe., er mouth soft.
“I’ve never felt that kind of fear before,” I said. “It was like my soul took off running without telling the rest of me.”
She was quiet, still looking at me like I’d just peeled back skin and showed her something bloody and real.
But there was no judgment in her eyes–just understanding. And I loved that. I loved that she now looked at me like she understood me better now, rather than look at me with the kind of fear she used to before.
