Chapter 9
Randy hadn’t shown up for a whole month.
I assumed he’d returned to the States.
Decades of connection, finally severed for good.
I couldn’t deny feeling a certain loss.
But I had bigger problems–my mental state was deteriorating rapidly.
I felt constantly drowsy.
Charles took me to see his doctor friend, but even he was stumped.
So I increased my coffee consumption, desperate to stay alert.
But instead of helping, it made me even more lethargic.
During another foggy night, I was about to surrender to sleep when someone burst into my bedroom.
Before I could react, he covered my mouth and forced something between my lips.
Randy?
He was covered in blood, breathing hard.
“Shh, I’m getting you out of here.”
He scooped me up and carried me through the window.
We’d barely made it a few yards when shouts erupted behind us:
“Shit! She’s gone! After her!”
Randy cursed under his breath and ran faster.
Suddenly, memories clicked into place-

Were my recent symptoms because…….
But who would do this to me?
If not Randy, then who could silently poison me in both lifetimes?
My train of thought was interrupted.
In front of us was an endless sea.
Behind us, countless men and vehicles blocked our escape route.
We were… surrounded.
I instinctively picked up a wooden stick.
The next second, Randy tossed me into a small wooden boat.
It was the only vessel on the shoreline.
“Hold tight!”
He pushed the boat into the sea, the freezing water reaching his chest.
He started trembling, but kept pushing the small boat with all his strength.
I grabbed his arm:
“Stop! That’s far enough! Get in!”
“Don’t be silly. This boat can’t hold us.”
“How do you know it?”
I frantically tried to pull him aboard, but he caught my hand.
“Sarah, there’s a watchtower ahead. My people will meet you there.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll hold them off.”
He pressed a cold kiss to the back of my hand:
“Trust me.”

With one powerful push, he sent the boat drifting away.
I watched him turn back toward the shore and screamed:
“Randy Wilson! You better come back! I’ll marry you if you do! I promise!”
He waved at me. That’s when I saw what he was holding-
A homemade bomb?!
The shoreline erupted in a massive explosion.
“RANDY!!!”
