Chapter 4
When I opened my eyes, I was lying in a hospital bed.
Through the glass window, I caught Randy’s face before he ducked away.
I closed my eyes with a sigh-
Of course he’d check if I was dead or alive. The promise to my parents demanded at least that much.
The cops had rounded up all the attackers. They told me that if I hadn’t shown up, Beth would’ve been trafficked into a brothel.
I knew that all too well.
In my previous life, nobody saved Beth.
By the time Randy and his friends had burst in, she’d been beaten half to death.
The trauma, followed by watching Randy marry me, had pushed her to suicide.
For thirty years of marriage, Randy had repeatedly accused me of setting up that rainy night attack.
During our most heated arguments, I’d accept blame for this crime I never committed, pushing our relationship beyond any hope of repair.
Thankfully…
My debt was paid.
In my previous life, he’d thrown himself in front of a car for me. In this one, I’d taken a knife for the
woman he loved.
When I woke up again, Randy was warming my IV bag with his hands.
Once I’d whined about how cold the fluid felt.
From then, he’d always warm the bag with his hands.
“I’m moving the wedding to Miami…”
I blinked in surprise:
“You already know?”

“Yeah, Beth told me everything.”
My phone buzzed with a text from my assistant:
[Ms. Harris said yes to being the bride]
I sighed:
“As long as you’re happy…”
He looked at me, confusion briefly crossing his face before his expression hardened again:
“It’s all my fault.”
“You don’t need to apologize. This was my choice.”
His phone rang, cutting our conversation short.
The caller ID flashed-
[Beth]
“I’ll be right there. Hang tight.”
Randy hung up and adjusted my blanket: “See you at the wedding.”
I nodded:
“Don’t worry, even if I don’t make it, my gift will.”
He paused at the doorway, frowning:
“That’s not funny.”
I just smiled.
He hesitated for a beat, then turned and left.
My advisor texted:
[Flight leaves tonight. You sure you’re up for it? I can reschedule if needed.]
I replied:
[I’m good, Professor. On my way to meet you now.]
