Chapter 7
Another “normal” family breakfast together. That’s what Mom calls it. But if you ask me, I’d say it’s another forced family breakfast. Mom was rattling off her plans for the day with all the energy of a well–rehearsed act, while Dan nodded along politely, as if her whims didn’t drive him as crazy as they did me. How could they? He doesn’t know that Mom is cheating on
him.
“Don’t worry, Dan. You’ll soon be free from this mess,” I thought as I took a sip of my coffee, doing my best to avoid letting the words slip out.
Just as I began to sink into the quiet bitterness of my thoughts, Kaiden cleared his throat.
“So…. I heard that you guys are divorcing?” he said, his tone calm and nonchalant, like he was simply making small talk, but his gaze locked directly on them.
The coffee I had just sipped almost came spraying across the table as I choked, coughing violently. Mom’s face froze, the cheerful mask slipping, replaced by a flash of panic. “What? No! Why would you say that?” Her eyes darted to Dan, looking for some kind of backup.
Dan looked equally confused. “Yeah, why would you think that?”
Kaiden’s eyes flicked over to me, an unreadable look hovering on his face, one that I knew too well. It was a smug, taunting expression that told me he was about to drop a bomb.
“That’s what Lu-” he started.
Without thinking, I kicked him sharply under the table. He winced, catching himself, but that smirk didn’t waver.
“Oh, never mind,” he shrugged it off. “Just a thought. A… lazy thought.”
Mom and Dan exchanged a wary look, clearly unconvinced, but neither pushed further. I swallowed down the urge to glare daggers at Kaiden. Only if he were my real brother, I’d have no problem actually choking him for that stunt.
My phone vibrated on the wrinkled bedsheet beside me, the notification grabbing my attention. I picked it up Kaiden’s text lighting up the screen, his words practically pulsing with impatience.
and saw
“I don’t have all day, Introvert.”
I rolled my eyes, pushing aside the annoyance, and swiped my curtain aside to look down at the place where he parked his
car.
There he was, leaning casually against his car, scrolling through his phone. But then, as if some sixth sense told him I was watching, he looked up, meeting my gaze with an annoyingly smug grin. He raised a hand in a lazy wave, then tapped his wristwatch, gesturing that we were already late for school.
Tearing my eyes away, I exhaled sharply and quickly texted back, “On my way.” But, of course, I wasn’t. A mountain of clothes was towered in front of me, and somewhere in the chaos was my hockey jersey. I needed it, but it was as if the thing had vanished into thin air.
“Come on,” I muttered, diving back into the mess for one last search. “Where are you?” My fingers rifled through the piles, but after a few frantic minutes, it was clear: the jersey wasn’t there.
“Ugh! Forget it!” I growled under my breath, frustration bubbling up. Grabbing my bag, I bolted for the door, all the while hearing Kaiden’s car horn blaring from outside, each honk ratcheting up my nerves. “Damn you, Kaiden!” I let out a low
curse.
I slid into the passenger seat, still catching my breath, only to find Kaiden already staring at me with that lazy expression, as

if he hadn’t been waiting but lifting dumbbells for more than an hour. He raised his shoulders in a small, camaal shrug, his brows lifting as if to ask. What’s going on? Why so late?
“Sorry,” I mumbled, fastening my seatbelt and looking away, too flustered to even try explaining the mountain of clothes that had swallowed my jersey somewhere in my room.
In the car, the silence between us felt thick. It was awkward, pressing down on us after last night’s conversation.
Normally, silence with him wasn’t that bad; it was comforting, almost natural. Today, though, it sat in the air, heavy and uncomfortable.
Clearing my throat, I finally spoke up. “Ah… um… about the divorce thing” My voice came out softer than I intended, but I kept going. “I’d like you to forget about it. I just said it out of anger. My mom frustrates me, you know? It has nothing to do with our parents. so maybe you should stop giving us heart attacks like you did at breakfast?”
Kaiden’s mouth twitched in that half–smirk of his. “My apologies,” he said smoothly, a little too smoothly, and his eyes held that knowing gleam.
I sighed, forcing a laugh.
“Oh, by the way, could you drop me off at Brendan’s place? I want to just… surprise him.”
He shot me a glance, one brow raised. “If you’re meeting him, why’d you make me wait?”
I bit my lip, rolling my eyes a bit, trying to keep it light. “Because if I don’t leave with you, my mom will start asking questions. And trust me, she won’t like the answers.” I shrugged. “Just trying to avoid another mess.”
He didn’t respond, just exhaled in that way that told me he was annoyed. He made a sudden sharp turn, the car picking up speed. I glanced at him, noticing the tension in his grip on the wheel, but he kept his gaze forward, not saying another word. He was clearly irritated, though he’d never admit it.
We pulled up in front of the boys‘ dorm, and the car screeched to a halt. I was surprised that he knew the address, but instead of asking, I just brushed it off since I couldn’t wait to hug my boyfriend.
I turned to him, offering a small smile. “Thanks, Kaiden,” I said, hoping for a flicker of his usual response. But he just stared straight ahead, face blank, as he rolled up the window and drove off without even a nod.
I frowned as I watched him speed away, wondering what his deal was. He’d been so cool and calm last night, so why was he so moody today? But then, with a little shake of my head, I brushed it off and turned toward the building. After all, this was about surprising Brendan, not worrying about Kaiden’s mood.
“Hello, Mr. Forlani!” I waved as I passed the guard at the entrance, hoping my smile masked the leftover awkwardness.
He smiled back, tipping his cap. “Hello, beautiful Lucy.”
“Have a nice day!” I called.
“You too, miss,” he replied warmly.
I made my way down the hallway, stopping at Brendan’s door. I was about to knock but paused when I noticed the gap between the door and the frame–it was slightly ajar. Curiosity piqued, I gently pushed it open, but froze in my t door swung inward.

The scene in front of me made my eardrums go numb, and I felt like my heart just stopped beating. Brendan was there, in bed… with Matrix, his roommate. And they were kissing, oblivious to my presence.
