I could feel the tears rising, but I fought them back. I refused to let them fall

“I’m sorry, Luc.” Thor’s voice was softer now, almost gentle. He lowered his head, his gaze unreadable, his usual lightnew stripped away in the face of my distress. “I know it’s hard. But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he just got the folder. Maybe it was recent, something he wasn’t expecting to find. Maybe he didn’t intend to hide it”

He gestured toward the folder, his hand brushing against the smooth surface of the table. “It wasn’t buried or locked away. It was just… there. So maybe, just maybe, he was planning to tell you once you were in a better place. I mean, you’ve been so upset with all the rumors about us, and… I don’t know. It could be that he didn’t want to add more to your plate.

The door suddenly opened with such heavy force that the walls seemed to shake in response. It was Kaiden.

A stream of chilled air permeated the room, but it wasn’t that cold draft which surged down my spine–it was him.

“Kaiden,” Thor said in response. “What the hell, man? I know your dad pays for the door, but still, dude, come on!”

He didn’t gave a damn about whatever Thor said just now, he just stood still in the doorway, his broad shoulders rising and falling with heavy breaths, as if he had been running. His sharp features, usually unreadable, were thrown into stark relief by the dim light of the room. The tension in his body was palpable–coiled energy, restrained fury. But then his gaze dropped.

To my hands.

To the crumpled document.

To the truth now laid bare between us. 

His expression shifted in an instant. A flicker of recognition crossed his face, followed by something that looked almost like regret. His brows knitted, his nostrils flared ever so slightly, and his lips parted, just enough to speak–but no words came. He didn’t need to say anything. The answer was written all over his face. He knew exactly what I had just uncovered.

“Lucy-” His voice was rough, uneven, laced with something dangerously close to desperation.

I sucked in a sharp breath, feeling it scrape against the walls of my lungs like glass.

“Thor,” I cut him off, directing my gaze towards Thor. My voice was ice. “Can you please leave us alone.”

A thick silence filled the room.

“I said leave,” I repeated, my tone unwavering, though the storm brewing imide me threatened to consume everything in its path.

“Okay, I’ll be right outside,” Thor exhaled slowly, reluctant but resigned. “I hope they just don’t kill each other, he murmured before shoving his hands into his pockets and stepping out.

The moment the door clicked shut, the air between Kaiden and me grew unbearably heavy. The walls felt closer, the space between us a battlefield waiting to collapse.

Kaiden took a step forward.

I took a step back,

Not out of fear. Not out of intimidation. But because the betrayal sitting in my chest was too raw, too deep. I needed space, distance, anything to keep from unraveling in front of him.

He noticed.

His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, his hazel eyes dark and unreadable. And for a fleeting second, he looked guilty. Almost. But I wasn’t going to let that fool me.

I clenched my fists, the paper crumpling further in my grasp.

“You knew.” The words left my lips in a whisper, but they carried the weight of a scream. “You knew this entire time, didn’t you?”

Kaiden opened his mouth, but I didn’t let him speak.

“Tell me you didn’t,” I whispered, my voice cracking under the weight of the truth that was strangling me. “Tell me that you found out just now. Tell me you didn’t fool me like Barbara did.” The words barely formed, but they held the gravity of a thousand unsaid things, the words that had been eating me from the inside out. Tears fell, streaking my cheeks as I choked. on the pain. “Tell me, Kaiden. Just tell me. It doesn’t even have to be the truth. Lie to me, and I will believe you. Please,” I begged, my body shaking as I crumbled to my knees.
