Her words echoed in my head, heavy and suffocating, long after she walked away. I stood there, frozen, fists clenched so tightly my nails dug into my palms. My chest felt like it might explode from the mix of anger, hurt, and defiance swirling inside me. It was like her warning had branded itself into my mind, each word a whip, each syllable a challenge.

“Lucy?” Thor’s voice broke through the haze of my thoughts. I blinked, turning to find him standing just a few feet away, a mischievous grin on his face. His hair was a little damp from dancing, his shirt untucked and rumpled in the most Thor–like way possible.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said, stepping closer. His head tilted in that familiar, slightly mischievous way, the one that always made me feel like he was seeing right through me. “Or maybe….” He trailed off, his lips curling into a playful grin as he studied me, almost like he was trying to figure out what was going on in my head. “You need a hug?”
He spread his arms wide in a dramatic, over–the–top gesture, his shoulders rising as if he were offering himself up as the solution to all my problems. His expression was so exaggerated that I could’ve sworn I saw the ghost of a wink in his eyes, like he was expecting me to crack a smile.
But I didn’t.
“What do you want, Thor?” I snapped, sharper than I meant to. But he didn’t seem bothered. Instead, he just dropped his arms with a shrug.
“No hugs, got it,” he said, his voice lowering, like he was sharing a secret with me–just for us. His eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned in, his lips curling into that signature smirk of his. “What about the real stuff?” He tilted his head toward the kitchen, winking. “You know… the good stuff?”
Normally, I would’ve brushed him off, but after the mess my mom had made of my day, I really needed something to numb the sting. I needed something strong.
I squared my shoulders and met his eyes head–on. “The stronger, the better,” I said, my voice steady, coated with defiance.
Thor’s eyes
widened in surprise, and then his grin stretched wider. “Oh, Lucy. I knew there was a wild side to you,” he teased, motioning for me to follow him.
He reached into his shirt and pulled out a silver cross locket, dangling from his neck. With a flick of his wrist, he popped it open, revealing a handful of tiny, colorful star–shaped candies.
“Seriously?” I deadpanned, folding my arms as I stared at the little sweets. “That? That’s what you call the good stuff? Those are literally candies.”
Thor snapped the locket shut with a flourish. “Okay, okay, maybe not good stuff, but how about a portable rocket?” He glanced around like he was about to tell me some top–secret information. Then, dropping his voice to a whisper, he added, “One of these, and you’ll see stars.”
I rolled my eyes, about to walk away, but then Thor grabbed me by the arms, stopping me dead in my
tracks.
“Wait, wait,” he said urgently, his grip firm but not painful. “Don’t blow my cover, Lucy. If Mr. Sterwalt sees this, I’ll be in deep trouble. It’s…” He glanced around again to make sure no one was watching, then added, “ecstasy.” His face was serious now, a strange glint in his eyes.
I raised an eyebrow, the skepticism dripping from me. “Ecstasy? Really?”
There was no way an 18–year–old had access to something like that.
Thor nodded, his grin playing at the corners of his lips. “Yep. The purest kind. One tiny candy, and it’s like you’ve traveled to another world.”

I hesitated, my eyes flicking from the locket to Thor’s face. Doubts warred with the chaotic feeling gnawing at me. But, honestly, I just needed something to break through this suffocating mess in my chest.
“Really?” I asked, voice laced with uncertainty.
Thor opened his locket again, eyes gleaming. “If you don’t believe me, try it.”
I took a breath and snatched a green, star–shaped candy from his locket. With one last look at him, I popped it into my mouth.
“Here goes nothing,” I muttered, bracing myself for whatever was about to happen.

At first, the candy was just… sweet. Nothing too wild. But then, the room around me seemed to shift. The edges of everything blurred, and the music in the background suddenly felt like it was vibrating through my entire body, alive in a way I’d never felt before.
I blinked, heart racing. “What… the hell?” I muttered. The lights overhead were glowing, not just shining, but radiating. My senses were sharp, everything clearer, crisper, more intense.
My skin tingled, and I exhaled a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding.
“See? Told you,” Thor’s voice was distant, but somehow right next to me at the same time. He was grinning, clearly enjoying watching me process the experience.
I stood still, hands gripping the counter to steady myself. The world around me felt like it had shifted, everything more vibrant, more alive. More real, in a way.
