I thought the car would stop right beside me, or at least.near me, but it didn’t. Instead, it sped straight ahead, tires screeching as it made a sharp drift that sent a spray of dust into the air. The vehicle skidded, its glossy black paint gleaming under the warm glow of the late afternoon sun, before pulling a perfect U–turn and coming to a halt right beside us.
For a split second, the world seemed to pause. The only sound was the low rumble of the car’s engine, steady and menacing, like a predator’s growl. I squinted through the settling dust, my heartbeat still racing from the shock of the car’s dramatic
entrance.
“Uff, such a show–off,” I muttered, my hand clamped around my nose to protect myself from inhaling the dust.
With a purposeful action, the driver’s side door opened, and Kaiden emerged. He didn’t rush. He didn’t need to. The air around him seemed to shift as he emerged, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the pavement.
He took a glance at me but immediately his gaze flicker at Matrix. His eyes were like twin ice shards as they focused upon Matrix, his jaw was set, and his motions were deliberate and piercing. “Don’t you even dare to get closer to her.” Kaiden spoke, his voice firm and low but brimming with danger, a threat of violence that can make listener’s skin crawl.
Matrix froze in his way, his earlier anger faltering as a flicker of uncertainty crossed his face. He then reflexively took a few steps back, his massive shoulders hunching slightly from the invisible weight of Kaiden’s rage.
It was almost comical–despite his height and size, Matrix couldn’t help but shrink in the face of Kaiden’s rage. The sheer force in Kaiden’s gaze made him anxious, and I couldn’t help but be amused by the thought of the allegedly indestructible Matrix crumbling under that silent yet intense strain.
Kaiden then turned towards me. He stepped closer, moving slowly and carefully. The transition was abrupt but warm. His countenance softened, the rough edges fading as his gaze met mine. His eyes, which had been icy and sharp seconds earlier, were now filled with concern.
His hand reached up to gently brush a loose strand of hair from my face, his touch soft and hesitant. “Are you okay?” he enquired softly, and tucked the strand behind my ear, his fingers barely touching my skin. But it was his eyes that stood out –intense and searching, almost desperate. They scanned my face, looking for any sign of anger or hurt, silently hoping not to find any.
The concern in his gaze was overwhelming. A part of me wanted to break down, to lean into him and let him carry the weight on my shoulders, to tell him about my aching back. But then I remembered how he reacted when he saw my mom slap me. If he disrespected her for just that, I couldn’t imagine what he’d do if he knew how Matrix had thrown me against the wall like I was nothing.
“I’m okay,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. “I punched his balls.” I attempted to offer him a reassuring grin, but it felt fragile on my lips.
“Good girl,” he said, and then, before I could react, a startled gasp escaped me as he swept me off my feet and lifted me effortlessly into his arms.
“Kaiden!” I protested, but the words were half–hearted, my voice betraying my surprise more than any real objection. His grip was firm but gentle, one arm cradling my back while the other hooked under my knees.
He didn’t say a word as he carried me to the car. Jaw tight, eyes forward, every step swift yet calculated. His movements were precise, controlled, like he was afraid of hurting me.
When we reached the passenger side, he opened the door with one hand while holding me with the other and gently set me inside, the motion so smooth it felt like second nature.
He then closed the door with a soft thump and moved around to the driver side. Sliding into his seat with seamless precision, his fingers curled securely around the steering wheel as its engine roared to life.
The engine’s growl cut through the tension, but it did nothing to ease the tightness in the air. I watched him, heart

hammering in my chest, as his gaze locked with Matrix’s through the windshield. The anger in his jaw was sharp, his teeth clenched, and his knuckles were bone–white from gripping the wheel with all his might. For a moment, I thought he might just snap, slam his foot on the gas, and run Matrix down without a second thought. The raw fury in him was almost tangible, vibrating in every muscle.
But the car jolted forward, and we drove past him. Relief was about to trickle in, but I guess today wasn’t the day for it. Without warning, Kaiden slammed the brakes, the sudden stop throwing me forward against the seatbelt. My heart jumped into my throat as he shifted gears and reversed, the tires screeching as we sped backward.
“Kaiden, what are you” I started, but the words choked in my throat as the horrifying realization hit me. He is going to run Matrix down by the car. “Oh, no…. fuck! Please, Kaiden, don’t!” Panic surged through me, and I squeezed my eyes shut, unable to bear the sight of what was about to happen, my heartbeat was almost near to halt.
The car screeched to a sudden halt, the tires protesting as it skidded to a stop.
I braced myself, fearing the sickening thud of a collision which, luckily, never came.
Slowly, I opened my eyes and saw that the car had stopped just a half inch from Matrix.
Matrix’s body was trembling, his eyes were frantically begging for forgiveness, and his bronze face was nearly pale.
Kaiden’s hand rested on the gearshift, his fingers twitching as if he were holding back the urge to run Matrix down. His eyes burned with a cold fury that sent a shiver down my spine. If looks could kill, Matrix would have been six feet under by now.
For a moment, the world stood still. Even the street seemed to hold its breath.
Damn! That stunt had nearly gave me a heart attack. I wonder if Matrix had peed his pants due to fear–because if I’d been in his place, my odds of staying dry were slim to none.
