“I’m not ignoring you,” I said, rolling down the window slightly. The cool breeze brushed against my face, carrying the faint scent of autumn leaves, cooling the heat rising in my cheeks. I turned my gaze to the road ahead, avoiding his sharp profile. “I’m just… I’m just focusing on the things that matter most to me. Like avoiding any controversy.”
“Good for you,” he said, his voice purposefully flat. His fingers tapped lightly on the driving wheel trying to show off that he wasn’t interested in the conversation.
“Speaking of controversy…” I ignored his lack of interest and began by closing the window with a click before focusing my complete attention on him. “I remembered something that I wanna say to you.”
Kaiden’s gaze remained fixed on the road. “First, you say you’d like to ask something. “Now, you want to say something?” His voice contained a trace of humour, and his hold on the wheel loosened slightly. “Why don’t you take your time and make a decision? “Because trust me, with that increasing curiosity of yours…”
He paused, and then his hazel eyes flicked toward me. The weight of his gaze made my breath hitch, and my grip on the seatbelt tightened instinctively. My heart raced, pounding so loudly I wondered if he could hear it. Half of me screamed to remind him to watch the road. The other half melted under the intensity of his look, even if it was fleeting.
“With that increasing curiosity of mine….?” I asked, the words stumbling out before I could catch them. My voice sounded small, almost drowned out by the hum of the car.
His lips twitched again, his smirk deepening, this time unrestrained. He tilted his head slightly, his expression smug as he broke the silence. “With that curiosity of yours, we might end up having another controversy,” he finished, his tone calm and teasing, his eyes sliding back to the road as if the moment hadn’t affected him in the slightest.
I cleared my throat, an inadequate excuse to ease the tense atmosphere that hung between us. “Do not worry. “We won’t,” I answered, giving him a short glance. My speech came out more steadily than I expected, but my pulse betrayed me. “Also, the thing I want to say and ask is… well, the same.”
“Shoot,” he replied casually as he turned sharply left. The movement flexed the muscles in his arm, and the silky movement of tendons beneath his skin drew my attention like a trap.
For a few second, I almost forgot how to breathe, my fingers twitching with an intense want to reach out.
Kaiden must have noticed because he cleared his throat, making a sharp sound that jolted me out of my reverie. “That’s not a good sign of someone trying to avoid controversy,” he said with a mocking tone that made my face flame.
“Oh yeah, I just…. I just…” I stammered and fumbled through the words like an idiot. My eyes shifted to the window, as if the blur of trees outside could save me. “I was just distracted.” Sorry.”
The apology was only half–hearted. To be honest, the other half of me didn’t feel bad about looking.
Kaiden’s lips twitched, but he didn’t push further.
“So, the point is,” I continued, my voice firmer, “I was checking Queen Bee’s article yesterday, you know, the one she wrote about me. But… It seems out her entire website, account–everything–was destroyed.
His hands tightened around the steering wheel, leaving a subtle groan of leather in the air.
“And today…” I continued, pausing for effect. My fingers brushed across the chilly fabric of my shorts, keeping me grounded as I moved ahead. “Not that I want it, but nobody–nobody–gossiped about her most recent post. It’s as if it never existed.
Kaiden did not answer right away, and his profile revealed little. The sound of the engine broke the silence, but I wasn’t going to back down now.
“So the question is…” I slightly leaned forward, each word heavy with curiosity. “Do you have something to do with that?”

“Oh, that post. Yeah, I got that deleted,” he said, his tone so casual it was almost insulting. He adjusted the rearview mirror, as though he hadn’t just done the world’s biggest favor for me.
“Her entire ID, page, and everything else was deleted too,” I added, my voice tight with disbelief, the enormity of what he’d done pressing down on me like a heavy weight.
“Yeah, I know.” His fingers beat a leisurely cadence on the driving wheel as his gaze remained fixated on the road. “Our hackers tried to get into her system to delete just the post, but her security was ridiculously tight. He tilted his head slightly, his hazel eyes finding mine for a fleeting moment. They lacked uncertainty and exuded a serene assurance that made my heart race. “However, luckily, it wasn’t that hard to erase her whole existence,”
I blinked, the words crashing into me like a wave.
“Her whole existence?” I asked.
What does he mean by whole existence? Had he done something to her? Something extreme, like the morally grey men in my favorite books do to protect their loved ones? Not that I’m implying I’m one of his loved ones or anything. It’s just the kind of irrational, overdramatic reaction from a bookish girlie like me.
My heart was on the verge of stopping as wild thoughts raced through my mind.
“Yeah.” Kaiden shrugged. “I had to make sure the post was removed before anyone could see it,” he continued, his tone maddeningly casual. “When we realized we couldn’t just delete the post, I told them to take care of everything. You know–if you can’t get into the house, burn the house.”
I stared at him, the metaphor hanging in the air like smoke from an actual fire.
“Seriously?! What are you? Klaus Mikaelson?” I wanted to say that loud but I fought the urge to.
“You mean her social profile only, right?” I asked, shocking feeling bad for Queen Bee. “Not her house. The house thing was just a metaphor, right?”
“Yeah. Don’t worry, I’m not that cruel,” he replied. The usual smirk he wore–the one that screamed I like to irritate people— was nowhere to be found. Not that I missed it, but its absence stirred something in me, a quiet unease I couldn’t quite place. “Also, even if I were, she’d still be safe because the hackers couldn’t crack her identity.”
For the first time, I wasn’t annoyed by Kaiden attitude, I was scared. I felt an unexpected pull to take him seriously. There was a gravity in his actions, a side of him I hadn’t seen before, and it made me feel unsteady, like the ground beneath me wasn’t as solid as I’d thought.
Kaiden’s body language remained calm and collected as usual, his fingers lazily grasping the wheel. The ease with which he handled the weight of what he’d done was disarming, and his deeds were too important to ignore.
“But… wh… why would you do that?” I enquired, turning to face him, my voice full of concern and inquiry. “I thought you enjoyed seeing me get in trouble.”
Kaiden’s lips quirked upward in a small smile, but his eyes was fixed on the road ahead.
“Yes, I do enjoy seeing you in trouble,” he said, the playful lilt in his voice making my heart skip. The car slowed as we approached the mansion’s gates, the engine humming softly, its rhythm almost matching my uneven pulse. The guard stepped out to open the gate, and Kaiden tapped the wheel impatiently, his fingers drumming a steady beat.
“But…” His voice drifted off, careful and measured, as if he was considering his remarks.
“But what?” I pressed, attempting to hide the stress in
my
voice.
He didn’t respond until the car passed through the gate and into the lengthy driveway. The tires crunched across the gravel as he swapped gears, leading us to the parking lot.
