I stared silently as Penny shot me a smug sideways glance, acting like she’d won the world.
I stayed still until my assistant worriedly whispered, “What do we do now? All three of them left–who’re you gonna choose?”
The other guests frowned among themselves.
“A woman needs to marry eventually. If she’s rejected by three men she grew up with, who else could possibly want her?”
I wiped away my tears and smiled, raising my wine glass in a toast:
“Distinguished guests, as you all know, today isn’t just my birthday celebration–it’s also my engagement party.”
A stern face appeared on the massive projection screen.
Everyone gasped.
“Isn’t that Lucas Hayes from the capital?!”
My dad, having just closed a multi–million dollar deal, arrived just in time to join in:
“Indeed. Only the most exceptional man could be worthy of my daughter.”
“Those three boys? I only took them in because they were orphans and I felt sorry for them. This ‘childhood fiancé‘ nonsense is completely absurd!”
产
Even after what my dad said, the guests still had that skeptical look on their faces.
Some of my dad’s close business partners warned:
“Lucas is definitely capable, but that accident a few years ago…”
“Everyone knows Lucas is paralyzed and incapable now. You’re letting your daughter marry a man who can’t even give her children? Who will inherit your business empire?”
“We already doubt a woman can run your company, but couldn’t she at least marry a normal man?” The uncles muttered.
People might call Lucas a capital prince to be polite, but deep down, everyone saw him as damaged goods. Everyone knew his assets would sooner or later end up in someone else’s hands.
So why couldn’t that someone be me?
Ever since Alexander made those remarks, I realized that even as the Sinclair family’s sole heir, no one believed the company would ever truly be
mine.
If that was the case, I might as well choose a powerful man who couldn’t steal the Sinclair fortune from me.
Alexander was busy comforting the “traumatized” Penny when he checked his phone and immediately frowned with disgust:
[Get back here NOW! Ellie just announced her fiancé! You’ll regret it if you don’t return!]
Max and Dylan had received similar texts from their contacts.
Alexander instinctively wanted to ignore it, but kept wondering–why the sender so insistent? They said he would regret not getting back to them.
Was Ellie choosing Max or Dylan instead?
Alexander studied both men carefully before finally texting back: [Who did Ellie choose?]
When a photo came through, Alexander’s pupils contracted in shock, his face frozen in disbelief.

Max and Dylan exchanged a look, then yelled at the same time, “Holy shit!”
“Ellie chose that paralyzed, useless cripple?”
“That’s impossible!”
Penny, still snuggled in Alexander’s arms, flashed a victorious glance in her eyes before slipping into her innocent routine:
“Is Miss Sinclair just trying to make you jealous? You left her birthday party because of me–she must be furious.”
“Maybe you should go back. I’ll be fine on my own.”
She spoke while hot tears streamed down her face, instantly melting all three men’s hearts.
The hot–headed Dylan declared, “Ellie’s always playing games. I want to see if she’ll actually marry that cripple. Just wait–she’ll be crying and begging one of us to marry her instead.”
Alexander relaxed at these words.
Of course–Ellie had loved him for years, chasing him non–stop. How could she suddenly marry a paralyzed guy just because they skipped one birthday party?
Penny kept her eyes fixed on Alexander. Seeing his silence, jealousy flashed across her face.
“It’s my fault for getting in Miss Sinclair’s way,” she whimpered. “Even though she sent someone to ruin my reputation, I shouldn’t have crashed her birthday party.”
“What if she convinces her father to cut off your allowances? I don’t want to cause you any trouble.”
Her words made all three men’s expressions darken.
Nothing irritated them more than being reminded they were dependent on others.
Dylan coldly replied, “I have two hands and two feet. I’ll be fine without their money.”
Alexander stroked Penny’s head reassuringly:
“Don’t worry. Ellie can’t handle the Sinclair empire. She’ll come begging us to return and manage the company.”
“Don’t talk about being a burden. Ellie is the real villain here. If she hadn’t tried to hurt you, we wouldn’t have ditched her and made her lose face today.”
They thought they’d just embarrassed me a little. They diddn’t think about what would happen.
Alexander, anxious as hell, finally texted me:
[You crossed a line today. No need to spite us by marrying a useless cripple. If you apologize to Penny, I’ll marry you.]
