Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Upon hearing Sophia’s voice, Ethan froze in place.
But before he could turn to look at her, Veronica suddenly clutched her chest.
“Ethan, I don’t feel well,” she said, collapsing in front of him.
Ethan’s face filled with panic.
“Veronica! Veronica!”
Sophia quickly approached Ethan, but he scooped Veronica up and roughly pushed past her, leaving in a hurry.
As he left, he only said, “Handle the rest.”
Sophia was forced to stay at the police station with the lawyer to clean up the mess Ethan had left behind.
Deep into the dark night, Sophia, who had barely eaten all day, grew increasingly pale.
When the lawyer finished handling the final details, he turned to find Sophia fainting to the floor.
Sophia lay drifting in and out of consciousness on the hospital bed. She tried to open her eyes but couldn’t summon the strength to lift her eyelids.
In her haze, she seemed to see herself after Ethan’s “death.”
Her hair had turned white overnight. She sat motionless in what had been their room, refusing to eat or drink, growing weaker by the day until friends found her collapsed at home and rushed her to the hospital.
When the doctor told her she was pregnant, Sophia finally found a reason to live. But in her sixth month, she was in a car accident that took away her last connection to Ethan.
She would never forget the face of the driver who caused the accident–a face identical to Veronica’s.
When Sophia regained consciousness, only the lawyer was beside her.
“I apologize, Mrs. Fuller. I couldn’t reach Mr. Fuller. I bought some porridge–please eat while it’s warm.”
Sophia struggled to sit up, remembering how Ethan had carried Veronica away. She smiled bitterly.
“Thank you for your trouble. You can go now.”
After the lawyer left, Sophia removed her IV and prepared to leave the bed. The nurse changing her bandages quickly stopped
her.
“Why did you remove your IV? Where’s your family?”
Sophia lowered her eyes. “I don’t have any family.”

The nurse’s words caught in her throat, and she sighed before reinserting the IV.
The door opened again as another nurse came in to register her information, chatting as she wrote.
“People really are different. Look at Mrs. Fuller in the other ward–she only got scared, and Mr. Fuller called in specialists for a consultation. Waking them up in the middle of the night to come to the hospital–being his wife must be like heaven?”
Sophia couldn’t help but laugh at this, though tears glistened in her eyes.
After consulting seven or eight specialists, Ethan finally felt reassured about Veronica’s condition.
As his rationality gradually returned, he suddenly remembered Sophia.
He frowned and called her repeatedly, but no one answered.
After glancing at the resting Veronica, he quietly grabbed his coat and left.
Sophia had hired a broker to handle the sale of her studio space.
“Miss Reed, these things look valuable. Why are you burning them?” the broker asked with shock as Sophia threw item after item into a fire pit.
With an expressionless face, Sophia picked up an inconspicuous diary and tossed it into the flames without hesitation.
The flames surged upward, burning her hand. The broker quickly pulled her back.
“What are you doing?” a voice demanded.
