Chapter 7
Alexander stepped in closer, his breath heavy and erratic in my face.
“You seriously think you can divorce me?”
That was almost funny.
What on earth would stop me?
Before I could answer, Mrs. Westwood hurried over, hands trembling.
She grabbed my hand.
“Lillian, sweetheart, what happened?”
“Are you really leaving him? Did Alexander do something to you?”
She turned on Alexander.
“Apologize to her. Right now!”
Alexander furrowed his brows like I was speaking in a foreign language.
He shook his head slowly.
“If I had something going on with Charlotte, why would I ever marry you?”
His tone had softened, more than usual.
For once, he actually sounded like he meant it.
Old me probably would’ve teared up just hearing that.
Run into his arms, tell him, I knew you’d never betray me.
But not anymore.
I knew exactly what was behind that fake tenderness.

Chapter 7
“Alexander, I already told you this the other day.”
“My father’s gone. I’m done pretending to play house with you.”
“Whatever we had, it’s over.”
“You can play house with whoever you want now.”
He looked stunned, then let out a bitter laugh.
“You’re still mad about the beach trip?”
“You jealous of Charlotte? That’s what this is about?”
He turned to his mother.
“Mom, seriously? You’re taking her side? Look at her.”
“Does she look like the kind of woman who should be a Westwood?”
“Charlotte and I were discussing business.”
“She’s just twisting it into drama again.”
“Always throwing divorce around like a toddler having a tantrum.”
“Honestly, she needs a time–out to think about what she’s doing.”
If I actually believed he was capable of reflection, I might’ve laughed too.
But I’ve had a front–row seat to this show for eight years.
“Mrs. Westwood, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”
“But Alexander and I… this marriage is broken.”
“There’s nothing left to fix.”
She clutched my hand tighter, eyes welling up with tears.

Chapter 7
God, if I could just be her daughter without having to marry her son, what a dream that would be.
Vivian practically exploded.
“Mom, I’m your daughter! Why are you clinging to her like she’s family?”
She shoved her way between us, breaking our hands apart.
Mrs. Westwood smacked her hand away.
“Mind your manners!”
“What do you mean? I’ve never wanted her as my sister–in–law!”
Vivian jabbed a finger at me, chin up, eyes full of disgust.
“She’s been here eight years and hasn’t even gotten pregnant once!”
“She’s a disgrace to the Westwood name, hogging the spot that should belong to Charlotte!”
She wrapped her arm around Charlotte’s like they were sisters–in–arms.
Beaming like she just won prom queen.
Then she looked back at me with pure contempt.
She must’ve forgotten the way she used to cling to me like a lost puppy, calling me ‘sissy‘ every five minutes.
Whatever.
Let’s just call that eight years of raising a damn ungrateful brat.
But there was one thing I couldn’t let slide.
I was leaving–fine.
But I wasn’t walking away with a bunch of rumors hanging over me.

“Vivian, you wanna know why I never got pregnant?”
“Maybe you should ask your brother.”
