Chapter 10
I got a new phone.”
Moved to a new city.
It wasn’t even really about escaping Alexander.
What pushed me to leave… was a dusty old email I found from my grad school advisor,
dated two years ago.
Before I married Alexander and became a full–time housewife, I was working on my
master’s degree.
I was in the chemistry program, practically lived in the lab.
I was the best in our group–my advisor’s top student.
But after the wedding, I gave up my chance at a PhD.
I gave up everything to be there for Alexander.
My advisor was heartbroken but didn’t try to stop me.
He just kept sending me research papers, hoping I’d keep learning.
For the first couple years, I read them.
Then life got in the way, and I forgot.
But even two years ago, he was still sending them.
I reached out to him on a whim.
We were both surprised.
He didn’t ask why I disappeared–just asked if I wanted to come visit the lab.
No reason needed.

Chapter 10
The lab hadn’t changed much, but he had–he looked older.
He could tell I was on my own now, so he asked if I’d stay on as his teaching assistant.
He was getting older, needed the help.
I said yes.
After being out of the workforce for eight years, it wasn’t easy to start over.
Honestly, I barely remembered the chemical symbols I once knew by heart.
So I stayed up late studying, trying to catch up.
But the good thing about knowledge is… it comes back if you fight for it.
The job wasn’t too demanding–he still taught the classes.
I mostly handled the admin stuff, especially when it came to coordinating with companies.
I’d never worked at Westwood Corp., but I’d heard enough of Alexander’s phone calls to
pick things up fast.
Setting up meetings with investors? Not exactly rocket science.
What I didn’t expect… was to run into Alexander at one of those meetings.
