Chapter 2
In his study, Mukesh tied Camelia up tightly.
He ordered someone to stick a needle as thick as a child’s arm into her vein.
Through the half–open door, she heard the doctor telling Mukesh:
“Mr. Willibert, even though both your wife and Miss Elowen have the same rare RH blood type, your wife has a history of heart problems. Forcing her to donate blood could trigger acute shock.
I strongly suggest we go to the hospital for a proper transfusion treatment for Miss Elowen’s anemia instead of-”
“That’s enough,” Mukesh cut him off icily.
“Your only job is to make sure Elowen gets better. As for everything else, I’ll handle it my way.”
Hearing Mukesh’s approaching footsteps, Camelia slowly closed her eyes.
“Does it hurt?”
EX
His voice carried unusual gentleness:
“Just hang in there a little longer. We’re almost done.”
She turned her head away, not bothering to respond.
After they’d drained nearly a pint of her blood, her lips had turned purple.
At that moment, Elowen started coughing in the master bedroom.
Hearing this, Mukesh immediately stopped the doctor from removing the needle, demanding twice the amount of blood.
The doctor, breaking into a cold sweat, warned Mukesh that continuing would likely kill Camelia.
After a brief hesitation, Mukesh simply stated:
“Elowen is pregnant. The pregnant woman comes first.”
“But-”
Camelia interrupted the doctor’s protest:
“Just take it. Then let me leave.”
Looking at her bloodless face, Mukesh’s eyes flashed with cold fury as he opened his mouth.
He was about to ask if she was done with her tantrum.

Did she really plan to run away over something so trivial?
But Elowen’s sugary voice called out:
“Mukesh, baby~”
And just like that, she lured him away.
Two days later.
Camelia woke up in the hospital after going into shock and immediately saw Mukesh working on his laptop.
Their eyes locked for a long moment.
Without expression, he brought over a bowl of porridge and moved to feed her.
She shook her head:
“I can do it myself.”
After quietly watching her eat half the bowl, Mukesh asked:
“Are you feeling”
Ignoring his question, she said:
“I need my phone.”
Perhaps it was her distant tone, but Mukesh froze for several seconds before calling the housekeeper to bring her phone.
Noticing the numerous missed calls on her screen, Mukesh abruptly asked:
“Who’s been calling you?”
He’d never bothered with so many questions before.
A flash of irritation crossed her face as she replied:
“Someone you don’t know.”
Unbuttoning the top of his shirt, Mukesh glared down at her:
“Camelia, how much longer are you planning to keep up this princess act?”
“You think you can just walk all over me because I cut you a little slack?”
In the past, whenever Mukesh got angry, she would apologize while trying to calm him down.
But now, she simply pointed at his vibrating phone and said flatly:
“Elowen’s calling you.”

At that, Mukesh’s eyes lit up with a smile, and as usual, he stepped away from her into the hospital hallway.
The moment he left, her phone rang.
Before she could say anything, the person on the other end spoke anxiously:
“Weren’t you supposed to meet me? Camelia, have you changed your mind?”
“No, I haven’t. Something unexpected came up…”
“Unexpected? What happened? That’s it, I’m flying back to the country right now-”
She cut off his rambling and whispered:
“Just give me a few more days.”
When Mukesh returned to the room, Camelia had just ended the call.
Noticing the smile on her face–one he hadn’t seen in ages–Mukesh felt an inexplicable tightness in his chest.
But he’d just promised Elowen he’d rush back to sing lullabies to her and the baby.
So he didn’t have time to ask who she’d been talking to-
He assumed it was her cousin who often visited her. After all, since marrying him, her social circle had shrunk to only female
relatives.
Taking his laptop, Mukesh left without looking back:
“Camelia, there’s something at the school. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
Tomorrow, the day after, and the day after that–Mukesh never showed up.
Thanks to their mutual friends, though, Camelia kept receiving videos of him with Elowen.
He took her to galas and dinner parties.
Like some lovesick teenager, he couldn’t wait to introduce her to everyone.
The day Camelia was discharged, Mukesh posted a grid of nine photos on Facebook.
Against the sunset, he stood on a romantic hot air balloon, holding Elowen’s flushed face in his hands, kissing her passionately.
She commented:
[Wishing you both a beautiful baby and a lifetime of happiness]
Ten minutes later, Mukesh called her.
She didn’t answer.

Chapter 2
Half an hour later, after handling her discharge paperwork alone, Camelia spotted Mukesh and Elowen at the entrance to the
obstetrics department.
She overheard a young nurse saying to Elowen:
“Mrs. Willibert, your husband really adores you. He accompanies you every single time you visit.
During ultrasounds, he’s worried the gel might be too cold for you, so he always warms it up personally before letting us use
it.”
The pregnant women around them looked on with envy.
Unconsciously touching her belly, Camelia remembered that once, there had been a child in there too.
The day she lost the baby in a car accident, bleeding and miscarrying, she called Mukesh in tears.
Only to see a naked Elowen answer:
“Mrs. Willibert, Mukesh lost a bet, so he’s currently handcuffed to the bed as punishment. Did you need something from him?”
She hung up without a word.
Less than a minute later, Mukesh called back himself, holding a red–eyed, pouting Elowen as he unleashed his fury on Camelia, calling her petty and stupid.
He also said:
“I honestly wonder what someone as useless as you–who can’t even keep her own baby alive–can possibly accomplish. Camelia, you might as well get hit by a truck and die.”
Coming back to the present, she was about to walk away when Mukesh approached with a cold expression:
“Why are you just standing there like an idiot?”
Lowering her eyes, Camelia instinctively explained:
“I wasn’t following you, I swear. It’s just a coincidence. I’m sorry for bothering you.”
“Wait.”
As Mukesh called out, she caught a flash of jealousy in Elowen’s eyes.
