Chapter 18
Though Victoria was a wonderf! friend, we viewed my situation differently. I’d been doing everything possible to build my preparing myself physically and mentally to fulfill the role of breeder–but this was for my freedom, not the joyful motherhood envisioned,
“She’s right, Rachel, Emma agreed, checking something on her clipboard. Ive seen all your medical records, and youre doing great Taking time to stay healthy has done wonders for you. Plus, you ve gotten to Enow the pack. I hear you’ve made new friends?
I nodded with a small smile. “Yes… I enjoy going to the castle courtyard market.”
The memory o
of my outings with Tyler and Victoria warmed me.
The people of Ironjaw Pack weren’t what I’d expected–many had been kind, welcoming even, once they got past their initial
wariness.
“I loved the scarves you made for me and Tyler!” Victoria chirped. Somehow, I felt h
her laughter was a bit mischievous when mentioned her brother. “Do you feel more comfortable here?”
“Yes, I do feel more comfortable.” I answered honestly.
I lowered my eyes, thinking about my time here. People had been much kinder than I’d expected–everyone except the Alpha.
Yet even Alpha Nathan–as intimidating as he was–1 appreciated that he hadn’t done anything to hurt me. That night when I’d failed him, when fear had overwhelmed me completely, he could have punished me.
Instead, he’d stopped. In fact, part of me wanted to see him again, to prove I could do better.
The thought made my checks burn hotter.
“Rachel, you’ll do great! I just know it!” Victoria jumped up and grabbed my arm encouragingly.
I took a deep breath. This was my own r
own request; I believed I was ready but what if I messed up again? This might be my last chance, and I didn’t dare imagine the consequences if I couldn’t complete it proper
The thought made the smile fade from my face, which Victoria noticed immediately. She guided me to sit in a chair, her earlier excitement giving way to concert…
“Rachel, are you okay? What’s wrong? Can I get you something?” she asked, hovering anxiously.
Emma approached and answered before I could, “Victoria, you can give her some quiet moments and rest. Then she turned to me. Rachel, dear…”
Victoria made a childish face at Emma, still vibrating with excitement despite being asked to calm down. Then she ran out the door before I could say “thank you.”
Emma shook her head with a smile. “Crazy girl!“
Then she turned to me, her expression more serious. “Rachel, you can be honest with me… Alpha has given us more time if we need
I looked into Emma’s eyes and gave her a reassuring smile. “Emma, be fine. I promise.” I could hear my own heart pounding my ears, betraying my composure,
Emma hesitated, then sighed. “Alright. Please remember…” She took out a small clear container with several pills inside. “Take these.

They’ll make things easier.”
I looked at the pills with some confusion.
“These will… help with your heat, make the situation more… comfortable for you, Emma explained, her professional tone barely masking her discomfort. Take them before seeing him. They’ll help you relax, put you in a more… receptive mood.”
Emma’s words echoed in my mind. This would certainly help, but taking something like myself? Would I remember everything?
e this still made me nervous. Would I still be
When I darted a glance up to the s
spot where Emma had been seated, she was nowhere to be seen.
Now, I was left solitary in the vast Luna suite. My heart was pounding wildly in my chest, as if trying to break free from its cage. My thoughts were in a chaotic spirál, sharp and unrelenting, each one sing through my mind like a jagged blade.
Two days. Just a measly two days remained until I had to face him again….
