Chapter 159
When he squeered my hand back, his was warm with that Alpha heat. He shook his head, adjusting the blanket over his lege. No, thank you, I lost pathes not like an Alpha at all.
Don’t think like that, I replied. “I know you’re used to being the strong one who takes care of everyone around you, and that’s still who you me at volt core. You’ll be back on your feet soon. But if you don’t rest properly now, you’ll only make, things worse, and then you ll have to start at over again. You don’t want that, do you?
“No, I definitely don’t want that,” he shook his head. Rose, you’re quite persuasive. Your mind–linking ability must be exceptionally strong.”
I smiled back, trying to hide my discomfort at the mention of “mind–linking “Ill get you some water and crackers in case you’re hungry. That should settle your stomach.”
I gave his hand another gentle squeeze before heading to the kitchen, my scent betraying a hint of anxiety that I hoped he hadn’t noticed.
In the kitchen, Scarlet was cleaning up. She smiled at me in a way that seemed to suggest something, her nose twitching slightly as she detected my change in mood.
This wasn’t the first time in the past few months she’d given me that look. She and Selena often teased me about having romantic feelings for Carter
Usually, I’d brush it off, telling them it was nonsense, that there was nothing between Carter and me. Today, however, I was too tired to explain. Scarlet giggled at my silence, revealing her slightly pointed canines.
When I brought the water and crackers back to Carter, he was immensely grateful, as if no one had ever brought him anything before.
“You’re so kind, Rose. I appreciate it greatly. Your scent always calms me.”
“Really, it’s nothing,” I answered. “I’m right here if you need anything.”
Though I wanted to act as I had before, I realized it wasn’t as easy as I’d imagined. After offering my help, I nearly wanted to leave.
“Actually, I’d love for you to sing for me,” Carter prompted before I could escape, his gaze moving to the harp across the room, his eyes sparkling with longing.
The harp. Just yesterday, I’d imagined playing songs I’d once played for Nathan.
Now I would play for Carter, while Nathan was… only the Moon Goddess knew where.
“Of course, I’ll play something for you, I told Carter, pulling my thoughts back from the past. What I had dreamed of no longer mattered. This was my reality now.
I crossed the room and sat at the harp, noticing how many of Carter’s warriors now stood nearby.
My fingers hovered over the strings for a moment as I decided what to play. I chose something slow and quiet, deciding after a few notes to start singing along, my voice clear as moonlight with an undercurrent of sadness.
I glanced back into the room, looking at Carter. His face held a satisfied expression, his head tilted back, eyelids closed, a smile on his face. He looked
content.
I wondered if that was really the case. Was this all he wanted–his Eclipse pack, all this property, enough money to enjoy a good life, and nothing more?
Yet if that were true, why was he Nathan’s target? What role did he play in the war?
I hadn’t been singing long when Lucas came through the front door. He took one look at Carter and stopped in his tracks, his wolfish scent betraying his tension and hesitation. I continued singing and playing, but my gaze never left Carter’s second–in–command.
Lucas didn’t wake Carter. Instead, he turned and walked back outside, deciding it was better not to disturb his leader while he slept.
A warrior entered through the doorway as Lucas exited. They were about twenty paces away, but my werewolf hearing allowed me to clearly hear their

conversation
However, as they continued discussing whether the situation at hand was important enough, I caught enough words to understand what was happening.
They couldn’t find Nathan.
Have you checked the tunnel? Lucas asked, his voice low and urgent.
Yes, the other man said somewhat irritably, “several times.” I heard him say, “There’s blood, but no
sign of him.”
My heart skipped a beat at the thought of Nathan being injured, but then I remembered I shouldn’t care. That should make me happy–knowing he got a taste of his own medicine.
After all, he’d only used me as a tool to bear his heir, planning to kill me after I’d delivered.
“Keep searching, Lucas commanded, his voice carrying the authority of an Alpha’s second, ‘When the leader wakes, we’ll see what else he wants ad to do.”
