Chapter 154
Nathan’s POV
The sea breeze whipped across my face as I stood motionless at the bow of the ship, my eyes fixed on the shrinking sithette of Vortex Island,
My wounds throbbed beneath the hastily applied bandages, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside me.
Blood from my encounter with Carter had dried on my skin, forming a stark reminder of my failure.
I felt Tyler’s presence before he spoke. My Beta approached cautiously, his concern radiating off him in waves.
“Alpha, you should rest. Those wounds-
“It’s alright,” I cut him off.
I wasn’t fine actually, Rachel’s betrayal cut deeper than any silver blade. The image of her standing between me and Carter, protecting him, burned in my mind. My brother had orchestrated this perfectly, using my mate against me.
My grip tightened on the railing until my knuckles turned white, and I felt my Alpha energy spreading across the deck. The crew members nearby instinctively lowered their heads, avoiding eye contact.
“Tonight’s other operations?” I asked, my voice low and dangerous.
Tyler shifted his stance, maintaining a respectful distance. “We successfully infiltrated their communication systems and effectively cut off the island’s contact with Emerald City.”
“Good. We can use this to monitor their communications.” My jaw clenched as I stared at the horizon.
Yes, Alpha. Though I believe they’ve detected the breach. Mia is continuously monitoring the situation.”
I nodded slightly, my thoughts briefly shifting to military matters. “The supplies?”
“They were moved off the island before we could intercept them, but we’ve tracked the supply routes and sent the intelligence back to Ironjaw territory.”
“Has Mia received the report?” I asked, my voice carrying a barely suppressed rage.
‘She has. Mia has dispatched teams along the transport route. We’ve deployed enough warriors for an ambush before the supply ships reach the mainland. This will significantly reduce enemy resources available at the border.”
‘Good.”
Then I got a bit tired and went to the captain’s quarters. There, Tyler urged me to rest. The deep wounds on my shoulder and side were visible to the bone, requiring time to heal even with my Alpha recovery abilities.
“Those wounds-”
*Enough about the wounds,” I stated, pacing the small cabin.
All I could think about was Rachel and Carter. The Hollow emptiness in my mind told me she had blocked our mate bond, shutting me out completely. The realization stung worse than the physical wounds.
Carter had deliberately lured Rachel to witness our fight, showing her my savage side. Because I hadn’t shared my complete plans with her, my half- had easily convinced her I was a warmongering/tyrant.
As my mate, she should trust me unconditionally, I thought angrily, but deep down, I knew I hadn’t given her the trust she deserved.
I understood now that Carter had intentionally let me escape. He wanted me alive to suffer the pain of losing Rachel and our unborn child.

Alpha, should we plan another assassination attempt?‘ a warrior asked during our strategy meeting.

*Should I prepare for our return to Ironjaw territory, then?

Tyler stepped forward, concern evident on his face. “Alpha! You’re already injured. Exposing yourself again is too dangerous!”
I stated, “No worries, I know what I’m doing. Tyler, send a message to Mia requesting reinforcements. Make sure they rendezvous with us within two days.
Afterward, we’ll head directly to the border front.”
