Chapter 102
Rachel’s POV
turned my attention to the water just in time to see several gray dolphins leaping from the waves before diving back down.
“That’s amazing!” My green eyes widened in wonder.
When I turned to look at him, his face was so close to mine that my lips nearly brushed his cheek. I could feel my heart racing, my instincts responding to his scent.
The flight wasn’t long, and minutes later we began our descent. Awe started down, Carter slid back to his seat, and when we touched the water, he gave my hand a gentle squeeze.
I felt slightly embarrassed but reminded myself we were just friends and this was simply Carter’s way.
“Let’s go,” he said, jumping out of the seaplane first and then extending his hand.
I climbed out, hesitating before avoiding his hand–grabbing his arm instead to steady myself. A car waited to drive us the short distance to the baby furniture store.
When I stepped inside the shop, I was nearly overwhelmed by all the adorable baby décor that greeted my eyes. The various cub- themed bedding, toys, and cribs made me want to touch and see everything! Carter laughed when he saw me cover my face with my
hands.
“Nice little shop, isn’t it?” he asked, placing a hand on the small of my back to guide me inside, the warm touch sending comfort through my senses.
“Yes,” I agreed.
It was a mom–and–pop store, so not very large, but it contained so much. Everywhere I looked, the next item was cuter than the last. There were many Moon Goddess talismans and wolf–shaped decorations symbolizing protection for the cubs.
“Look at this,” Carter picked up a baby cap with little wolf ears sewn on top. He put it on his own head, though it was far too small for him–and it was pink.
I burst out laughing. “You’re quite a large cub,” I told him, my eyes twinkling with amusement.
Carter looked wounded as he took off the hat and set it down, purposely making his eyes appear larger. “Well, that wasn’t very nice:” He put on an injured expression.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I responded, then asked in a baby voice, “Did I hurt your feelings?” Then we both laughed so hard we could barely stand, his eyes turning bright gold with amusement.
An older werewolf lady approached to help us, more amused than annoyed by our jokes. When we could finally speak, I decided to let Carter tell her why we were there.
“Can I help you?” she asked, her scent identifying her as a seasoned Beta werewolf.
Carter was still chuckling lightly. “Hello, Mrs. Thompson, how are you today?” His voice carried the gentleness of an Alp respecting an elder.
“Oh, Mr. Carter!” She bowed her head in respect for the high–ranking Alpha. “Forgive me, I didn’t recognize you in this… situation.”
“No, no, it’s fine,” he waved casually. “This is Rose. I believe my deputy Lucas called to tell you we’d be coming to look at baby

furniture?”
“Yes, I just spoke with him,” she smiled brightly. With her white hair and glasses, she looked like the sweetest grandmother figure. “Miss Rose, do you have any ideas about what kind of nursery furniture you want? We have many special designs for little cubs.”
stared at her for a moment, because I really hadn’t given it much ought. When I lived with the Ironjaw pack, I knew all these decisions would be made without my input. “No, ma’am,” I said. “Not specifically.”
“Ma’am? My goodness, you’re so polite! You don’t need to be so formal, dear. Well, come along, let’s see what we have, and you can tell me which you like best, then we can narrow it down from there, Many Alpha–blooded cubs need especially sturdy crib rails.”
For the next hour or so, we walked around the little shop, looking at all the options. I looked at several different cribs, but when I finally saw a cherry wood crap at the back of the store, with its beful luster that seemed to glow in the light, I thought:
That’s the one.
