Chapter 151

Rachel’s POV

The massive black wolf leaped powerfully across the yard, disappearing into the shadows. The guards quickly stripped and shifted, pursuing Nathan with determined growls, but I knew they wouldn’t catch him

His Alpha scent was far too powerful, a blend of pine and cedar lingering in the air before gradually fading

1 knelt beside Carter, carefully cradling his head in my lap. Guilt crashed over me as I looked at his wounds. Blood seeped through his clothes, his handsome face contorted with pain

I’m so sorry,I whispered, my voice breaking

Selena rushed to us, checking me first before quickly bandaging Carter’s wounds. He didn’t speak immediately, just reached up to touch my cheek with a gentle hand, offering a weak but warm smile that made my heart ache even more

Tears filled my eyesnot for Nathan’s departure, but for my terrible decisions. I had a friend who’d consistently supported me, yet I’d betrayed him, willing to return to an Alpha who once planned to kill me after I gave birth

CarterI gasped, noticing how his face grew increasingly pale. His breathing became labored, sweat beading on his forehead despite his attempts to

reassure me

I’m okay, he whispered unconvincingly

Help!I called frantically to the surrounding guards. He needs help now!”

Two guards quickly arrived, carefully supporting Carter’s arms and carrying him back toward the house. I followed closely, unable to stop my tearsnot just for Carter, but for Nathan too

He had used me again…

Selena waited anxiously at the door. The doctor’s already here! He’ll help him!”

I insisted they take Carter to my bedroom. My hand gripped his, unwilling to let go, determined to stay by his side

At the back porch, Selena gently but firmly blocked my path. Let’s give the doctor some space, Rose. You need to stay calm for yourself and the baby. She paused, then added, Nathan and Carter are halfbrothers, you know.”

I figured as much,I replied with a bitter smile. So Nathan lied to me, and Carter did too.”

I’ve done what I can with his wounds,Selena explained. But the doctor is who he needs right now. We’d only be a distraction in there.”

I nodded numbly and sat heavily on the bench on the back porch. My baby kicked gently inside me, sensing my distress. I rested my hand protectively over my belly, thinking how just hours ago, I’d gone to sleep looking forward to my first night in this new home

Now I sat contemplating Carter’s injuries and how I’d been betrayed once again

Selena’s words echoed in my mind: halfbrothers. How could they be so different? Nathan, cold and powerhungry; Carter, warm and peoplefocused

I should have noticed the resemblance earlierCarter’s strong jawline and dark hair had reminded me of Nathan when we first met, though Carter’s wasn’t as jetblack

I remembered Tyler telling me about Nathan’s past, how his stepfather had been abusive to his children. I’d been so shocked learning that Nathan had killed Gina’s father that I’d completely missed other detailshis stepfather had two children: Gina and Carter

What should I do now? Should I stay? Who can I trust? Can I trust Carter

Carter had always cared for me, promised to protect me and my baby. He’d never hurt me

Chapter 151

But he didn’t know I’d deliberately chosen this house to meet with Nathan through the secret tunnel

How would he react when he found out? Would he still consider me a friend? Would he be angry that I’d met his enemy behind his back, on his vefritory

I suddenly understood Carter’s previous mentions of a scenthe’d smelled Nathan all along but chose not to confront me

Selena sat quietly beside me, but I felt utterly alone. 1 buried my face in my hands, my copper hair falling forward to hide my tear stained face. She rubbed my back soothingly, but I had no words, lost in my thoughts

I felt like a complete fool. I recalled how I’d moved around the nursery, arranging everything just so, wondering what Nathan would think. I’d naively imagined our things there together, pictured our life together, raising our child, thinking this would be our forever home

With painful clarity, I now realized Nathan never truly planned to live with me longterm. All the sweet things he’d done had one purposeto use me again
