Chapter 142
Rachel’s POV
The sound of the shower running faded as Nathan turned off the water. I quickly slipped back into my dress, my cheeks burning with embarrassment.
What had I done? I’d practically thrown myself at him, begging for his touch like some desperate-
No. I wouldn’t think that way. There was nothing wrong with wanting my mate, my Alpha.
Still, I couldn’t help the wave of shyness that washed over me as I heard the bathroom door open.
Nathan emerged, his black hair still damp, wearing only his pants. Droplets of water clung to his muscular chest, catching the moonlight streaming through the window. His scent filled the room–pine and cedar, stronger now after his shower.
I looked away, suddenly unable to meet his eyes. “I’m sorry about before. I don’t know what came over me.”
“Don’t apologize.” His voice was gentle as he approached, tilting my chin up with his finger. “Never apologize for wanting me, Rachel. I want it as well. You are really cute.”
His gray eyes searched mine, and I felt my heart flutter in my chest. How could this be the same man who once terrified me? The Alpha who had planned to… No, I wouldn’t think about that now.
“Would you like to see the bedroom now?” I asked, desperate to change the subject.
A smile played at the corners of his mouth. “I’d love to see the bedroom. But before that, I have something to show you.”
“Something to show me?” My voice lifted with curiosity.
“It’s a surprise.” His lips curved into that half–smile I’d grown to love. “You’ll need to be patient.”
“A surprise… for me?” I couldn’t keep the wonder from my voice or my eyes from widening.
“Only for my Luna.” His voice dropped an octave, possessive and warm.
Nathan took my hand, leading me from the nursery down the hallway to the study. Moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting long shadows across the oak bookshelves lining the walls.
He approached one bookshelf, his movements purposeful. With a gentle push against its corner, the bookcase swung inward, revealing a hidden door behind it.
“A secret passage…” I whispered, my heart racing with excitement.
“This is it.” His eyes swept over my rounded belly with concern. Considering your condition, can you safely go down? It’s
not far.”
“Of course I can,” I nodded determinedly, my hand instinctively cradling my bump.
Whatever he wants to show me, I want to see it. Whatever he gives me, I want to receive.
Behind the door was a ladder leading down into darkness. Nathan descended first, then helped me down carefully, his

strong hands ensuring I didn’t slip.
The passage sat about seven feet below the house, its walls made of ancient stone. The tunnel stretched before us, lit by small lights embedded in the ceiling.
This way, Nathan said, his voice echoing in the narrow space. We need to walk a bit. It would be faster if I shifted. You could ride on my back.”
I nodded, excitement bubbling within me despite my attempt to remain calm. Nathan began removing his clothes, and I collected them as he shifted.
The transformation was always mesmerizing–his body contorting, bones restructuring, until a massive black wolf stood
before me.
His fur gleamed in the dim light, muscles rippling beneath. His eyes remained the same gray, though brighter and more intense in his wolf form. He lowered himself, allowing me to climb onto his back, careful not to put too much pressure on my pregnant belly.
As we traveled through the tunnel, it gradually widened, the ceiling rising higher. Ancient wolf symbols decorated the walls, telling stories I couldn’t yet understand. Nathan moved steadily, his gait smooth and careful to protect me and our
unborn pup.
The tunnel eventually led to an exit cleverly disguised as a fallen tree. Nathan helped me through before shifting back to his human form, pulling on only his pants and leaving his chest bare. The ground beneath our feet was soft with pine needles and fallen leaves.
