Chapter Two
Ava’s POV
My body shook with fervor as I sat still at the edge of the bed, my hand gripping the hard edges of the wooden pole housing the bed while my mind replayed Kyle’s words and his expression when he entered. It was like my brain understood what just happened, but my heart was in denial.
Who would believe it if they were in my shoes?
It was just too hard to accept because Kyle isn’t someone like that. I’ve known him for half my life, and I could count the number of girls around him. He was always so focused, the only woman in his personal space was his mother – his ever–present tail – until me.
So how could someone like him get another woman pregnant? And worse, how could his parents act like it was nothing?
The betrayal felt like a wildfire in my chest, consuming everything in its path. My breaths came short and uneven as tears blurred my vision. This wasn’t how I imagined my life. And this…. this change was so sudden and cruel that my brain felt hazy, their words swimming in my head, loud and taunting, paired with the image of that woman’s stomach.
What am I supposed to do?
How do I handle this?
The door creaked open, pulling me from my thoughts. I didn’t bother looking up. I half–expected it to be Kyle, coming to explain himself – probably with some pathetic excuse. But the familiar scent of my mother–in–law’s overpowering perfume filled my nostrils.
My head snapped up just in time to see her standing there, hand outstretched.

Not to me.
To her.
The other woman.
I was on my
et in an instant, aggressively wiping my eyes clear as confusion twisted inside me.
“What are you…
“She’s sleeping here,” Regina stated casually, leaving an eerie silence in its wake.
My heart pounded loudly in my ears. My mind struggled to process the absurdity of what I’d just heard. “Excuse me?” My voice was low. I needed to hear her say it again because surely, I misheard. My gaze flickered from one woman to the other. This had to be a joke because now, this was out of their boundaries. Regina sighed in annoyance. “I’m sure you heard me loud and clear, Ava.” She rolled her eyes before looping her arm around the woman, pulling her close.
That’s when I saw her, like really saw her.
Looking at the woman now, I could see how large her stomach was. She was either close to her due date or simply had a naturally big belly. Whatever the case, it wasn’t like I was knowledgeable about such things, nor

did I care. What I cared about was how she could be so calm, standing in the middle of the room with her hands wrapped protectively on her stomach, as if the room belonged to her and I was the intruder.
A surge of rage rose Inside me, threatening to choke me.
“Lilian here is tired and needs to rest,” Regina said like she was discussing a harmless inconvenience.
What the f**k is this?
If I thought I was on the verge of exploding with anger, I was entirely wrong, because the only thing keeping me from knocking some sense into my mother–in–law at that moment was my own self–respect – not hers.
“She can rest wherever the hell she came from. Or better still use the guestroom if her legs are too heavy to move,” I said, my voice dripping with venom.
Regina’s expression hardened, I could see the fire blazing in her eyes. She wasn’t expecting that. Good. Because I was done playing the perfect daughter–in–law. For the first time since I married into this family, I do not care what she thinks about me. She lost my respect the moment she dragged this woman into my home.
Regina straightened, eyes still blazing. “Lilian has to sleep right next to the father of her child since she is close to her due date.” Her chest puffed up like she was proud of the filth she just spewed.
“That’s bullshit,” I snapped, the fury in me erupting into flames. I had always held my tongue with her and respected her like a mother, but not today. Not anymore.
“That is…”
“I don’t care where you brought her from, but I demand you to take her back.” My voice shook, but not with fear – with rage. “I don’t care if the child she’s carrying is Kyle’s. I don’t care if they’ve already shared a bed… heart clenched painfully, but I shoved it down “…but not in my home. Not in my bed.” My voice had risen now, sharp and steady. “You have disrespected me enough, but I refuse to tolerate this.” I yelled.

It was too much. Too absurd. Too cruel. My chest heaved as I struggled to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. I felt humiliated, betrayed, and utterly alone. And as if that weren’t enough, they expected me to step aside so she could sleep in my bed with my husband. I had never heard anything so outrageous so utterly degrading.
The air felt too thick to breathe. My chest rose and fell rapidly, the weight of their betrayal, their cruel actions pressing down on me.
Regina’s brows shot up in both anger and disbelief. I had never seen her this furious before, likely because I had always done my best to be the perfect daughter–in–law. But now? I didn’t give a damn about her feelings. because it was painfully clear she never cared about mine.
She took a step toward me, her voice lower now, taunting. “Of course, it’s your house,” she said, mocking. “No one said otherwise. But it’s time to face reality, Ava. You’ve failed as a wife, and it’s only polite and self–preserving to shift when another woman succeeds where you never could.”
She leaned in slightly, her next words a whisper laced with cruelty. “You should even be thankful we’re offering you a place in this family.”
I stilled.
My lips parted, “A place?” I whispered, my voice hollow, ignoring the part where she called me a failure. Regina smirked. “Yes, a place.” She gave a deliberate pause, letting the moment drag before delivering the

final blow. “For a reason I don’t seem to understand, my son still wants to keep you around. So we’ve decided you can stay. But not as his wife.”
I didn’t move. I couldn’t.
Not when the world tilted.
Not when every breath felt like inhaling shards of ice.
Not when she said…
“You’ll sign the divorce papers and accept your role as his mistress.”
