Chapter 342
KESTER.
PRESENT.
After the tragic incident that took place two days ago, I had become the villain to my pack members. Everyone suspected me. And of course, I’d have suspected me, too, if I were to be in their shoes.
Now, I had to sit here and listen to the council members ramble on about the incident, tossing around theories and speculations, while I waited quietly like a lamb whose fate was being decided at the slaughter.
All these weren’t really so much of a concern to me at the moment. My only concern was the fact that Kasmine thought I lied to her. She hadn’t even let me anywhere close to her room for the past two days now.
Mum even told me she was sick yesterday Pregnancy stuff, I guess. She called in the family doctor and handled everything without telling me until it was over.
That didn’t sit right with me.
The amount of time Kasmine was being exposed to Mum recently made me fucking worry. And when she’s in that vulnerable, emotional state, she listens too easily. She absorbs things she shouldn’t. Mum knows exactly how to play people like her, especially when she’s hurt and unsure.
And especially now that she thinks that I killed Blaine. The last thing I needed was for Kasmine to take a decision she
couldn’t walk back from.
“Alpha Kester?” A voice called, making me realize I had zoned out briefly, “What do you have to say about this?”
All twenty–three pairs of eyes were on me, waiting for me to defend myself.
I cleared my throat and adjusted in my seat, scanning the wide hall before speaking.
“You all certainly think I am a coward,” I began, doing all I could to hide the disgust I felt, “You’ve already tried and
sentenced me in your minds.”
“I’ve ruled this pack for years. Many of you watched me grow. You knew me when I was a boy, you fought beside me when I became Alpha.” I paused, taking in their expressions. “Now tell me, in all those years, have I ever struck you as a man who would choose the coward’s way of taking down an enemy? Am I one who hides behind others to get his hands dirty?”
I let the question sink in, narrowing my eyes.
“I don’t pay cowards to do what my fists can handle. If I wanted Blaine dead…” I paused, letting the words burn, “…I’d have killed him myself. I would’ve broken his bones one by one until the last breath left his lungs, and I’d do it in front of
every damn one of you.”
There was silence.
“I’m not a fool. And I’m not a traitor. But what pisses me off the most is that while you all sit here looking for someone to blame, the real traitor is still out there, smiling at your ignorance.”
“But this was too convenient, Alpha Kester. Everyone who made up the opposition was in that meeting. If someone wanted

to wipe the slate clean, that was the moment,” Elder Ben said, And to think that you were in the pack that morning, just before the meeting… It’s all too convenient.”
Slight murmurs erupted and some agreed with him.
Haven’t you learned anything from me in all my years of leading you?” I snapped, “Whenever it becomes too obvious that the enemy is within, that’s the perfect time to look outside because the enemy is most likely an outsider after all!”
I growled, already losing my patience, “We have so many enemies as a pack. I also have my own enemies. Ever thought they might have planned all these just to set me up? Ever thought of that? Or you all are quick to judge because I am the easy option?”
The hall went deathly still for a long moment.
“Now, about my bond with my stepsister…”
All eyes were on me again. Some frowned, while others straightened, preparing to protest. I saw it coming. So, I didn’t give them the time.
“You’ve all gossipped behind my back. Hell, some of you have said it to my face. As if it’s the first time in history that the Moon Goddess has paired people you don’t agree with. Let’s set the damn record straight.”
