Rachel’s POV
sat in the nursery, my fingers working methodically as I finished the embroidery of the Moon Goddess symbol on the baby blanket.
The soft yellow fabric felt comforting beneath my touch, and I smiled at the thought of wrapping my little one in it soon.
The sudden sound of commotion from the garden made me freeze. My heart raced as my first thought flew to Nathan. Had he been caught by Carter’s guards?
I carefully set down the blanket and rose from my chair, one hand instinctively cradling my swollen belly as I moved toward the window.
In the living room, I found Scarlet and Selena peering through the window into the yard. I couldn’t make out exactly what was happening–my senses had dulled with the pregnancy–but could see several pack members moving about purposefully.
Selena explained, turning to me with a reassuring smile. “Mr. Wilson apologizes for all the noise, but the special scent- repelling flower beds he ordered have arrived. He’s sent warriors and gardeners to plant them immediately.”
Flower beds?” I asked, my heart skipping a beat as I recalled Carter commenting about a strange Alpha scent in the garden a few days ago. Nathan had been there.
“Would you like to sit on the porch and watch them plant?” Selena suggested. “We could get some fresh air. It would be
good for you and the baby.”
“Sure, that sounds nice,” I replied, masking my concern with a smile.
We settled on the porch steps, the afternoon sun warming our shoulders. I watched as the werewolves carefully planted rows of vibrant purple flowers that I’d never seen before.
After a moment of silence, I gathered my courage. “Selena, what are you thinking about?”
“I should be asking you that question,” she replied, studying my face. “You seem preoccupied.”
I hesitated before speaking. “I was just wondering… Since you know so many werewolves on this island… Have you ever heard of an Alpha who… after doing something terrible to his mate… still had an intact mate bond?”
Selena’s eyes widened. “Rachel, are you considering going back to the Alpha who hurt you?”
“No, of course not,” I quickly denied, looking away. “It’s just… hypothetically speaking. Just random Moon thoughts.”
dess
“Well, honestly?” Selena’s expression grew serious.
Please, tell me the truth. I need to hear it.”
She sighed heavily. “Honestly, Rachel, I’ve rarely seen mate bonds repair after being severely damaged. Almost never, actually.”

Chapter 136
My heart sank. Really? Not a single one?”
“Hardly any, dear. I know many who have tried…”
She went on to tell me about two couples–one where the Alpha apologized only to be caught with another female six months later, and another where an Alpha lost control during a full moon and attacked his Luna, causing her to lose their
pup.
“Most Alphas are just like that, Rachel. I’d say… 99% of them, once they show their possessive and controlling nature, they don’t change. No matter what they say through the mind link or promise before the Moon Goddess, they simply can’t do it. The Alpha nature is too deeply ingrained, their wolf instincts too strong. Even if they truly, truly want to change for their
Luna.”
I felt sick hearing these stories, my arms instinctively wrapping around my belly to protect my little wolf. Was I being naive about Nathan? Could he really change his Alpha nature?
“Are you sure…” I began hesitantly, “there’s not a single example of an Alpha who changed his ways after realizing he was about to lose his mate? No Alpha able to overcome their possessiveness and control?”
Selena’s expression softened. “Now that you mention it… I can think of one story.”
“Really? Would you tell me that story? It might make me feel better. I don’t want to think the werewolf world is such a dark, sad place.”
“Of course,” she nodded. “Once, there was an Alpha named… Car–son… Carson, who did some not–so–nice things to his… Luna.”
“What did he do?” I asked, curious.
“He did things behind her back, kept truths from her, was a bit sneaky. Planned many things she didn’t know about, endangering her safety.”
Something about this story sounded strangely familiar. “What was his Luna’s name?”
“She was called… Ro–se.”
I nearly laughed out loud. Carson? Rose? It was obvious Selena was creating a story based on Carter and me–though Carter had never done anything behind my back except protect me.
She continued, spinning a tale that ended with Carson and Rose living happily ever after, raising strong Alpha cubs blessed by the Moon Goddess, growing old together under the moonlight.
“Did you make that story up?” I asked, unable to keep the smile from my face.
“No! “I don’t know why you’d think that!” Selena protested, her eyes twinkling.
“You’re a good friend, Selena.”
Her expression grew serious again. “Rachel, I’m worried about you. These strange questions about mate bonds…”
“It’s just… pregnancy. You know. All these werewolf hormones. always get emotional during this moon phase. The next one will be better.”

Chapter 136
“If you’re truly considering returning to your original pack, Rachel, please… don’t. It’s really a bad idea. I would miss you terribly. Mr. Wilson would, too.”
“I know,” I said softly. “I think I’ll lie down for a while. My instincts tell me I need rest.”
*Alright. I have other pack members to attend to, but I’ll be back. Moon Goddess bless, Rachel.”
“Goodbye, Selena. And thank you again for your advice.” As she left, her final reminder echoed in my ears–stay inside, especially at night.
Back in my room, I finished the Moon Goddess symbol on the baby blanket as my little wolf kicked restlessly inside me. dinner, Carter didn’t come due to pack business, so I ate with Scarlet and Selena when she returned.
I need to communicate with Nathan through our mate bond, I thought, my wolf growing more anxious by the hour.
But with the increased warriors guarding the property, meeting with him would be nearly impossible. I feared what might happen if the two Alphas confronted each other over territory and me.
At
Night fell, and I stepped onto the porch, drawn to the newly planted scent–repelling flowers. The moonlight washed over the garden in silvery waves as I silently prayed to the Moon Goddess that my mate choice was right, that everything would work out.
Suddenly, dizziness overtook me. Is this because of the pregnancy? Or anxiety about Nathan? I turned to go back inside, but I couldn’t stay conscious.
My eyelids grew heavy and finally closed, darkness claiming me as my last thought remained a desperate concern for my
unborn pup.
