Though it made my wolf sna with jealousy to think of how her eyes lit up when mentioning Carter, I needed to prove I could control myself and take interest in what made her happy.
“If at any point you decide you’ve had enough, that you’ve made up your mind, that our mate bond is irreparably broken… I’ll leave. No Alpha commands, no coercion.”
Saying this broke my heart, but I knew I would do it if necessary, however against my Alpha nature it might be.
I silently vowed to find a way to prove to her that if the Moon Goddess had once connected us as mates, that connection could never truly be severed.
‘I don’t want to have those conversations with you, Nathan, Rachel said warily. “What if your nature takes over? What if you get angry?… You might kill me…and the baby…”
Her words shattered my heart into a million pieces. I couldn’t blame her for thinking this way; she didn’t know her power over me, didn’t realize I had acknowledged her as my only mate
“No. If you decide you don’t want to see me anymore, just close your window and cut off our mind link,” I said, shaking my head.
Rachel looked at me with confusion, uncertain if I would truly respect such a seemingly simple boundary.
“If the window is open, I’ll know you still want to see me, but if it’s closed, I’ll leave. That simple.” I used my gentlest voice.
“Would you do that for me? Give me a chance to prove myself?”
After a moment, Rachel nodded, her scent a mixture of hope and fear.
“I suppose I could,” she said. “I’m just… scared, Nathan. I don’t want to be hurt by you again. It took me so long to move forward. Now I’m here, I’ve started over. If you find a way to pull me back into your world only to break my heart again… I’m not sure I could survive it. But… I’m not sure that matters to an Alpha.”
“It matters to me, Rachel,” I said, looking directly into her eyes. You and our child matter more to me than anything. More than my Alpha status, more than the pack, more than the war in the Eastern territories.”
“Alright,” she finally said. “I’ll try. But if the window is closed, you must leave. Don’t try to use Alpha commands or force me in any way.”
A surge of joy flooded through me, warming my heart instantly. It wasn’t ideal, but it was enough to make me smile.
I nodded. “I swear it by my name as Alpha of Ironjaw. By the mate bond between us.”
Rachel glanced toward the cottage. “I should go. I have work tomorrow. The guards will be back on patrol soon.”
What do you do now?” I asked, not wanting her to leave immediately, knowing the pain would spread throughout my body again once she did.
“I house–sit for someone while he’s away,” she answered cautiously, not revealing too much.

Chapter 128
I wanted to know more about her relationship with Carter, but didn’t press further, not wanting to seem too demanding.
“He’s been very helpful to me,” she continued. “I ran into some trouble when I first arrived on the island, and he helped me. He provided me with sheer, work, and friendship.”
When she mentioned “friendship,” a smile appeared on her face that I hadn’t seen all evening, making my wolf want to
howl.
“You must like him a lot,” I couldn’t help saying, my
