Chapter 124
Rachel’s POV
1 scanned the garden frantically, checking every substantial bus and hedge where Nathan might be hiding.
I searched for any sign of him, but he had vanished–again. Just like that, he had disappeared from my life once more.
With one hand resting on my swollen belly and the other gripping the doorknob, I stepped back inside the cottage and closed the door behind me. The little house felt unusually empty now.
“What was Nathan doing here?” I whispered to myself, my fingers unconsciously tracing the cheek he had touched.
I couldn’t understand why he claimed to have come looking for me without explaining why. How had he found me?
Why show up now? I longed to sit with him again, to make him answer my countless questions.
Did he know I had overheard his plan to kill me? Why would he seek me out after I’d fled?
But I knew better. Nathan wasn’t the type of werewolf who would sit down for a calm conversation.
Lying in bed, I stared at the ceiling, wondering if I would ever see Nathan again. My eyes deepened to a dark green as my thoughts raced.
Maybe he was already headed back to Madison’s waiting arms by now.
Madison and that engagement ring of hers–the blinding gold flashed in my memory, making me wince.
There was nothing I could do. I tried to sleep, but my baby kicked restlessly inside me, as if sensing my distress.
In my fitful dreams, I kept seeing Nathan’s gray eyes flickering to gold, but every time I tried to speak to him, he vanished into the mist.
When morning came, my thoughts remained consumed by Nathan.
Selena arrived to check my vital signs and the baby’s condition while Scarlet tidied up the cottage, humming softly.
“Rose? Are you alright?” Selena asked, peering at me with concern. “I’ve finished checking the baby, and you usually bombard me with questions. Today you’re just staring into space.”
“Oh, sorry. I guess I’m a bit distracted this morning,” I replied, my fingers absently stroking my belly.
Selena’s eyes studied my face carefully. “Is everything okay? I know you had dinner with Carter last night.”
“We’re just friends,” I answered quickly, averting my gaze. “Is the baby doing well?”
“Yes, of course,” Selena nodded. “It won’t be much longer now. And you’re entering the final stage.”
I imagined myself giving birth, with Selena helping as moonlight streamed through the windows.
In my mind, I pictured the blurry male figure who might stand beside the bed–would it be Nathan’s intimidating Alpha presence or Carter’s gentle smile?

Chapter 124.
How different would the experience be depending on who was there? Carter would be supportive, possibly even making the tense process lighter.
But Nathan… would he focus polely
on his heir?.
“Don’t worry, dear,” Selena continued, interrupting my thoughts “I know childbirth is never easy, but you’ll be fine. I’ll be right there with you. Do you have any questions about the process?”
“Oh, no. I think I’ll be fine,” I said, my voice slightly shaky.
“If you have concerns, please tell me,” she reassured me. “Your baby is very healthy, and you’re young and strong with Alpha bloodlines. I’m certain it will be a completely normal delivery, and soon you’ll have your child to cherish and enjoy.”
As Selena packed her medical bag to visit other patients. Carter had pack business to attend to and would be away for a few days.
At dusk, I went outside to pick flowers, though I was really searching for Nathan’s scent. I scolded myself for leaving the safety of my home–how had Nathan made me so vulnerable again?
I tried calling to Nathan through our mind link several times, but received no response. Gathering a few flowers, I returned to the cottage, my unease growing.
Scarlet was still inside, smiling as she asked, “Would you like a vase for those, Rose?”
I nodded absently, thanking her while my eyes continuously scanned the windows. Why would Nathan come here if he didn’t intend to talk to me?
