Rachel’s POV
remembered Carter mentioning the pawnshop that morning over breakfast, just a casual comment as he sipped his coffee.
It seemed like a trivial detail then, but now, as Selena and I strolled through the market with two of Carter’s warriors following at a respectful distance, that information felt significant.
“Got everything you need?” Selena asked as we left the yarn shop. The weight of the yellow and navy blue yarn for my baby’s blanket felt comforting in my shopping bag.
“Yes, this should be enough,” I replied, running my fingers over the soft material.
I could already imagine the blanket taking shape under my hands, wrapping my child in warmth and protection.
Selena’s gaze drifted to one of the warriors trailing behind “That guard is quite handsome, don’t you think?”
I blinked in surprise. “I hadn’t noticed. Honestly, I’m surprised you’re looking.”
“I’m not looking for myself,” she replied with a knowing smile. “Just. you need to start thinking about the future. You’re beautiful and single. Being pregnant doesn’t mean your life is over. You and Carter keep emphasizing you’re just friends, so maybe you could be open to others.”
I appreciated her concern, but my mind was elsewhere. “Thanks for caring, Selena, but I think I’ll wait until after the baby is born to consider anything like that.”
We continued walking down the street, passing colorful storefronts. When we approached a shop with a weathered sign and various items displayed in the window, I stopped abruptly.
“Selena, I want to go in here.”
She followed my gaze. “The pawnshop? Why?”
“I have something to do,” I said, determination rising in my chest.

After a thorough inspection and some negotiation, the shopkeeper offered a sum that seemed more than fair.
I accepted without hesitation, feeling lighter as I tucked the money to my purse.
“Are you sure about this?” Selena whispered as we left the shop.
“I’ve never been more certain,” I replied, feeling a surprising sense of freedom wash over me.
With my newfound funds, we headed to the dress shop Carter had mentioned. The boutique was elegant but not intimidating, with beautiful fabrics displayed throughout.
“What do you think of this one?” I asked Selena, holding up a red dress against my growing figure.
“It’s perfect,” she nodded approvingly. “I’ve noticed Carter seems to like you in red.”
I hadn’t consciously realized it, but she was right. I decided to try it on, and when I emerged from the fitting room, even I was surprised by the transformation.
The dress draped perfectly over my baby bump, making it look elegant rather than cumbersome.
