My husband Nathan Carter hasn’t touched me once in five years of marriage.
If my skin accidentally brushed against his, I’d be punished by soaking in disinfectant for a full day.

With that, the laughter grew even louder.
“Zoey is allergic to the smell on Stella’s body, and she will feel nauseous when she smells it. That’s why you disinfects after every contact.” someone sneered. “And poor Stella actually thinks she’s unclean!”
“This auction’s doing her a favor!” Another voice jeered. “Finally gets to lose that pesky virginity. Bet she’s thrilled!”
The roof nearly shook from their mocking laughter.
I bit my lip hard, my fists clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms.
It took everything I had to stay standing.
For years, I’d believed myself contaminated–every night, I’d soak in disinfectant baths.
Over time, my skin had deteriorated–inflamed, red, covered in sores that never fully healed.
