Zachary’s hand clenched around Sophie’s fingers all of a sudden.
She winced and instinctively tried to pull away.
He didn’t even look at her.
Instead, he let go and strode to the table.
His gaze fell on the top page-“Divorce Agreement“-and for a brief second, his eyes flickered.
Just one thin sheet of paper, but it weighed on him like a thousand pounds.
Even the hands that once gripped an M4 with rock–solid steadiness trembled slightly as he unfolded the letter.

Zachary ran his fingers gently across the warped paper.

She stumbled and crashed to the ground, a sharp cry escaping her lips.
The gravel scraped her palms raw, blood welling beneath her skin.
She lay there in shock, wide eyes brimming with tears.
But Zachary never looked her way.

His eyes were locked on the letter.
“Saddle my horse!”
He snatched up the divorce papers and walked out fast, boots pounding.
“Zachary! Zachary-!”
Her cries followed him down the corridor, unanswered.
Watching him disappear, Sophie finally realized something-
This was slipping out of her control.
She scrambled to her feet to chase after him-
But a young lieutenant stepped in her path.
“Dr. Sophie, please don’t take it to heart.”
“The colonel’s just upset about the separation.”
“He didn’t mean to ignore you.”
“I’ll take you back to the medical tent and get that hand cleaned up.”
“He’ll come find you soon, I promise.”
Sophie blinked in surprise, feigning a gasp.
“Wait–he’s splitting up with her?”
Her voice went high with urgency, and even her cheeks flushed.
Always the calm, gentle one–today, her mask cracked.
The lieutenant furrowed his brow, his tone cooling.
Even the soldiers nearby exchanged looks.
Realizing their eyes were turning cold, Sophie quickly changed gears.
“I–I’m sorry. I was just… surprised, that’s all.”
The men nodded politely and said nothing more.
They escorted her back to the tent in silence.
Outside, the air felt heavier.
The moment lingered in everyone’s mind.

A younger soldier couldn’t help himself.
“Do you think the colonel and his wife are breaking up because of Dr. Sophie…?”
Another one snapped back, “That’s ridiculous!”
“Everyone knows how tight the colonel and Mrs. Kensington were.”
“But what about Sophie?” the younger one pressed.
“Ever since she showed up, things haven’t been the same. You know it.”
“Maybe the gossip got back to the colonel’s wife.”
“Maybe that’s what pushed her over the edge…”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Because deep down, they’d all played a part in spreading the rumors.
The older lieutenant sighed heavily.
“She always treated us with kindness.”
“But we…”
“We never should’ve said what we did earlier today…”
Later, when Sophie stepped out with her hand freshly bandaged,
She spotted Zachary walking her horse, Whirlwind, back toward the camp.
His eyes dropped to her hand.
“That bad?”
Sophie glanced down, then back up with misty eyes.
“It’s okay. You should go after your wife.”
“This is my fault. I shouldn’t be here anymore.”
“Just… let me see you one last time before I go.”
A flicker of guilt crossed Zachary’s face.
“Don’t talk like that.”
“She’s just being dramatic.”
“You need to rest–no more nonsense about leaving.”

Chapter 9
The soldiers standing neartry shifted uncomfortably,
They hadn’t expected Sophie to hear what they’d said.
Everyone knew the colonel showed her special favor-
So there was always a line they hesitated to cross.
Zachary swept a sharp look across the group.
“I’m not gonna be around for a bit.”
“I expect you all to take care of Dr. Sophie.”
After a moment’s silence, the soldiers saluted in unison.
Sophie’s eyes sparkled faintly.
She gave a soft smile.
“Thank you, Colonel.”
“I hope your trip brings you everything you’re hoping for.”
She stepped aside.
Zachary gave a firm nod, swung into the saddle, and took off.
With that, he shattered the vow he once made-
To love only one woman.
As Sophie watched him ride away,
Her smile faded into something darker.
