Tyler’s voice grew harder. “That Alpha was a brutal monster. He did even treat his own cubs well. One day, when Gina was playing in wolf form, his stepfather slapped her so hard it knocked her unconscious.”

My eyes widened in shock. “Gina is his half–sister?”
“Yes, same father, different mother. She has Alpha blood too.”
“That was the final straw for Nathan’s wolf. Even though he wasn’t an Alpha yet, his wolf went completely feral. He eventually challenged his stepfather and killed him in a moon ceremony. His mother died shortly after.”
Tyler continued, “He swore to keep Ironjaw Pack safe forever, but at the same time, he swore to the Moon Goddess he would never accept a mate bond.”
“So he doesn’t want amate because he believes any female would betray the bond like his mother did?” I asked.
“Basically, yes. He doesn’t want to give any female enough power to betray or destroy Ironjaw Pack… or himself. So since he knew he needed an heir…”
…he bought a breeder,” I finished, my voice trembling. “And according to his plan, he can ‘release‘ me without worrying I’ll come back to use the cub against him…”
Anger flashed through me suddenly. “It’s unacceptable that I might hurt him, but it’s perfectly fine for him to kill me?” My eyes flashed fierce green.
“Rachel…” Tyler’s amber scent turned painful.
“And he has this fear but is still marrying Madison…? Forgive me, but I don’t understand.”
“Rachel, you do understand…” Tyler said softly.
He said, “Nathan wants an heir completely belonging to Ironjaw Pack. One he can trust to hand his pack to eventually, without influence from the cub’s mother or even her pack. He needs to do this quickly because with war approaching, he knows he needs to do whatever necessary for the alliance, including marrying Raymond’s daughter.”
Tyler stood, preparing to leave. “I should go now. I just wanted to try to explain everything. I don’t dare ask for your forgiveness- you have every right to remain upset with me.”
He paused at the door. “If there’s anything I can do to make you more comfortable here, tell me through the mind–link. Whatever you think, Nathan’s has recognized you as his mate, even if he refuses to acknowledge it. His scent always warms when he’s around you. Rachel, please, don’t give up on him. Even if it’s for the cub in your womb.”
After Tyler left, I sat alone in the darkness, turning his words over in my mind. I was quiet, processing what I’d learned.
“Don’t give up on him…” Tyler’s words echoed in my thoughts.
Nathan had suffered from childhood because of his mother’s betrayal of the mate bond, so he distrusted most females.
I didn’t agree with his methods, but I could better understand why he was so resistant to bonding.
If I didn’t know about his plan to ‘release‘ me, I might even believe that when his eyes turned gold, when his scent warmed because he recognized me…

Chapter 61
Everything he’d done had only one purpose–he needed an heir, and he would do whatever might be necessary to produce a strong, healthy Alpha cub, including aking me feel somewhat safe and happy.
Just like he would do whatever ecessary to strengthen the alliance with Goldshore Pack.
He was an Alpha who knew what his pack needed and how to get it
Nathan might be blinded by his painful past, but that didn’t mean Iad to pay for his baggage with my life.
And what about my cub? Would this little life grow up without a mother? Would they have only a cold, duty–bound Alpha father? Would they have a Madison who would never love them and might even hate them for standing in her way to becoming Luna?
No. My wolf would never allow that for our cub. I was no longer afraid to face death, but this little life deserved more than coldness, political marriages, and hatred.
It was clear what I had to do. My eyes flashed with determination.
“Everything will be okay, little, cub,” I whispered, stroking my abdomen as my eyes glowed maternal green.
