Chapter 50
Tyler’s POV
My conversation with Nathan hadn’t gone as I’d hoped these past few nights. I’ve tried repeatedly to make him reconsider, but now he’s more determined than ever that we’ll proceed with the plan.
I can’t let him kill her. But I’m stuck in a far–from–ideal position. As Beta, I have a duty to execute Alpha’s orders, but this goes against my conscience.
The knock on my door came unexpectedly, sharp and urgent interrupting my train of thought.
I opened it to find Victoria on the other side, her face, contorted with rage, her scent sharp and intense as she pushed past me into my room.
She called out, “Tyler!
“What is it? What’s wrong? Is Rachel okay?!” I asked, trying to gauge the situation.
“Like you’d care. The sarcasm in her voice was palpable.
“Excuse me? I’ve been just as worried about her as you these past few days. I just don’t understand what happened to make her so withdrawn.”
“Is it true that the plan all along was to ‘release‘ Rachel after she gives birth? What does that mean, Tyler? Kill her?”
My eyes widened in shock. “Who told you that?”
“So it is true!” Victoria covered her mouth, her amber eyes flashing. How could you? She trusted you! You were the person she thought would protect her!”
“It’s hard to say.” My voice dropped low.
“What do you mean?! Rachel is like family to us, has become one of my best friends. You let us…”
“Victoria, you need to calm down right now! Control your scent, or the entire pack will sense your anger.”
“Then explain. Because right now, I can barely stand myself…”
“Shut up, before someone hears through the pack–link…”
I walked quickly to the door and closed it to prevent anyone from sensing our conversation through scent or pack–link.
I stated, “You need to remember your place, Victoria.”
“Or what, Tyler? You’ll ‘release‘ me too?!”
‘I won’t ask you again! Who told you?”
How I found out doesn’t matter.”
“It damn well does! This was between Nathan and me only. This secret was tightly controlled to protect the pack’s reputation.”
‘Forget it then.” Victoria turned to leave.
Chapter 50
I grabbed her arm. “Wait. What do you know? How much did you hear?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears. “Please, Tyler… for once, think of her. You two have already caused her so much pain. Just let her have this… please don’t tell Nhan she knows. Let her keep some dignity at least.”
The turmoil inside tore at me, my wolf howling in disgust at this plan that went against the Moon Goddess’s will.
In anger, I reached for a silver vase from a nearby table, nearly throwing it against the wall before barely regaining control.
“Fine,” I agreed reluctantly. “I won’t tell Nathan. But you need to make sure she doesn’t do anything rash.”
After Victoria left, I collapsed into a chair, my head in my hands. How had everything gotten so complicated?
I’d known Rachel was special from the moment Nathan brought her fo Ironjaw, but I never expected to care this much about her fate.
Days passed, and I tried to avoid Rachel as much as possible. I couldn’t look her in the eyes without feeling the guilt of Nathan’s plan weighing on me.
I was walking down one of the castle’s hallways when I spotted Nathan emerging from Rachel’s suite, panic evident in his expression, his pine scent sharp and cold.
“Alpha, are you alright?” I approached cautiously.
“Rachel’s missing… send out guards.”
He was agitated…
I answered, “She’s not missing, Alpha.”
“Then where the hell is she?!” he growled.
“I just saw her and Gina in the hallway. They’re meeting Victoria for lunch in the courtyard market.”
“You let her leave?!” His eyes were now fully golden with rage. “She was ordered to stay in her suite for her safety and that of the heir!*
Nathan pushed past me into Rachel’s empty suite, and I followed, closing the door.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I sighed. “What would you have medo, Nathan?! She’s pregnant. I can’t manhandle a pregnant she- wolf. And she was quite determined… basically told me, in not so many words, ‘fuck off, I’m going.”
