Chapter 49
When I finally confirmed they ere gone, their scents completely vanished, the weight of everything crashed down on me. I slid down next to the bedroom door, my copper hair falling in disarray around me, feeling more alone than when my father sold me.
What a fool I’ve been! To believe an Alpha would care for a breeder. My wolf howled in agony, feeling betrayed.
Did this mean it was all lies? Did Victoria and Gina know about this? Was my friendship with them fake? Was Emma’s concern only to ensure the heir’s health?
Tyler had known from the beginning! The person I trusted with my life knew Nathan planned to kill me, and he never said a word. My wolf growled in anger, feeling betrayed by the entire pack.
“Why?” I cried out. “Moon Goddess, why me?”
My hands protectively caressed my stomach as the realization fully hit me. Tyler wasn’t my protector. He was the grim reaper’s messenger, preparing for my “release.”
And Nathan… he wanted me dead! Why not just kill me outright? Why pretend to care?
Days passed by, and I refused to see Nathan and Tyler.
Nathan hadn’t come around since then. When Tyler came to ask me about it, I just told him to fuck off.
I was grateful he hadn’t come, as I didn’t know how I could face him, smell his scent without breaking down.
I couldn’t tell who was telling the truth anymore. Their worried glances told me nothing about whether what came from their mouths was true. Would their scents change with lies? Or had I never really known them?
Victoria had become my best friend, and I hated not talking to her. I hated our situation. I wanted to trust her, but had lost faith in all members of Ironjaw Pack.
When Victoria finally entered my bedroom, I was sitting by the window, staring blankly outside.
“Rachel?” Victoria’s amber scent revealed genuine concern.
I didn’t respond, continuing to gaze out the window.
“Please tell me what’s wrong… we’re all worried about you.”
I turned to face her, my face red and swollen, my eyes dry from all the tears I’d shed. My wolf eyes had surely turned dark green.
“Did you know? My voice was hoarse from days of silence.
Victoria frowned, confusion evident in her expression. “Know what?
You’re making me very anxious right now… don’t scare me. What’s going on? Your scent is filled with fear.”
When I remained silent, she moved closer. “Rachel…?”
that Nathan will release me after I give birth.” I stared into her eyes, looking for any sign of knowledge.
“What?! That’s ridiculous! What does ‘release‘ even mean?”
Chapter 49
“You know what it means. My eyes flashed green.
“Nathan cares about you, Rachel! He would never… never do that… Her voice weakened as she seemed to consider the possibility.
How… how did you find out…? Her question confirmed my fears.
I overheard Tyler and Nathan talking in the living room days ago. Tyler was arguing with Nathan about it, and Nathan said they’re sticking with that plan. Tyler knew from the beginning…”
“Tyler wouldn’t…” She hesitated. “No… he couldn’t! My own brother wouldn’t agree to such a plan.”
I shouted, “He never cared about me. He was just following Alpha’s orders.”
“I won’t let this happen, Rachel. I’m going to talk to Tyler… this isnt happening. I’ll protect you.”
“No!” I grabbed her wrist. “You can’t let them know that I know. Please, Victoria…
She stared at me, her amber eyes wide with concern.
“If I’m to be executed, I want to look him in the eyes when they kill me and tell him I knew. I love him, Victoria… and he destroyed me. My wolf chose him, and he chose to kill me.”
I couldn’t stop the tears from falling once more as Victoria wrapped her arms around me, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears.
