He exaggerated dramatically.“Wait, are you serious? You’re not trying to eat
for free, are you?”
It was hard to believe that the esteemed daughter of the Miller family was
broke. But I really was.
I was in my second year of university, managing a lot for my brothers. I had
no time to work, and my allowance was given by Yale. After repeatedly
“offending” Sarah, my pocket money had been drained. If the Miller family hadn’
t provided food and shelter, I might have starved on the streets without them
noticing.
“I saved you, and now you want me to cover the medical bills?” he asked, his
eyes suggesting I was trying to scam him.
I felt a little embarrassed. “How about I add your contact information, and I’ll
pay you back once I have some money…”
Just as they exchanged contacts, the hospital door swung open violently.
Seth stood there, glaring at us.
“Bella, Sarah was right, you really are with this scoundrel, Kevin!”
My expression turned icy.

“She’s in the hospital, not a hotel. What’s with that tone? Are you accusing us
of adultery?” Kevin said coolly, turning back to his phone.
Seth snapped back, “This is none of your business! I’m talking to my sister!”
“If you hadn’t said she’s your sister, I’d have thought you two were enemies.
She had a 40–degree fever and got kicked out of the house, and you come in here
not even checking on her health, but instead blaming her for being with her
savior?”
Seth’s temples throbbed at Kevin’s words. Any guilt he felt quickly vanished.
“She didn’t say anything! And she ran out on her own!” Seth then turned to
me.“Bella, can’t you be more considerate like Sarah? Can’t you just say when
you’re sick? You’re an adult! Can’t you find something to eat when you’re ill? You
had to run out and make a fool of us!” His eyes were filled with disdain for how I
embarrassed him.
I said coldly, “I was resting at home. It was you who dragged me out of bed. I
had a 40–degree fever, and you didn’t notice a thing.”
Seth felt a pang of guilt. He had noticed that I was slightly warm, but he’d
just assumed I was overheated from sleeping!
He glanced at Kevin. Seth’s pride was paramount. He considered me
disrespectful and retorted, “I’m not that observant. Why do you have a mouth if
you don’t use it?”

I smiled sarcastically. “You’re not observant? Yet when Sarah frowns, you
know she thinks the medicine is bitter and you’re right there with the sugar!”
