Chapter 13
“Julian, stop drinking.”
Julian downed glass after glass of whiskey, trying to temporarily suppress his inner turmoil.
“Phoenix loved me so much. How could she leave me?”
Julian’s friends didn’t know how to console him and called Elise instead.
“Julian, stop drinking.”
Elise rushed over and grabbed his glass.
Julian glanced at her, took the glass back, and muttered, “Leave me alone.”
The others tactfully withdrew, leaving Julian and Elise alone in the private room.
Seeing Julian like this, Elise swept all the glasses off the table onto the floor.
The shattering sound momentarily sobered Julian.
Elise couldn’t understand why, now that Phoenix had left, Julian–who had claimed to love her and abandoned Phoenix for her–was spiraling into depression.
Elise sat beside Julian, “Weren’t you always most fond of me?”
Julian lowered his head without responding.
“You clearly cared about me, willing to leave Phoenix to be with me, even risking your company’s losses to crash my wedding.”
“Julian, I was wrong back then. I shouldn’t have abandoned you. But now I’m back, I still love you, and you love me–why can’t we be together?”
Julian had married Phoenix partly to spite Elise after all.
This should have been what he wanted all along, so why wasn’t he happy?
Seeing Julian’s expression soften momentarily, Elise immediately embraced him.
“Leaving you without explanation for my studies was wrong. Julian, Phoenix is gone. Let’s be together, okay?”
Julian was rather drunk, looking at Elise with an unreadable expression.
He didn’t know what to do or what he truly felt.
Did he love Phoenix?
Initially, it had certainly been spite, but after years together, with her carrying his child…
Julian couldn’t deny he had developed genuine feelings for Phoenix.

But what about Elise?
This woman he’d once truly loved–after all these years, did he still love her?
Julian wasn’t sure, he only felt his mind was in complete chaos.
“But it hurts so much that Phoenix left,”
Seeing Julian was intoxicated, Elise cautiously suggested, “You’re just not used to it. Once you’re with me, you’ll forget her.”
Elise continued, “Julian, let’s start over together, shall we?”
Elise eagerly awaited his answer.
But Julian pushed away the approaching Elise without responding to her question.
He stumbled out, asking his friends outside to take him home.
Left without an answer, Elise watched Julian’s retreating figure and angrily hurled the sofa cushion to the floor.
