Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Previously, Phoenix would always wait for him on the sofa, running to greet him the moment she heard him at the door.
But now the house was silent, with not even a light turned on.
Julian felt a sense of foreboding.
He quickly set down the cake, turned on the lights, and searched room by room for Phoenix.
“Baby, where are you? Don’t scare me. What happened today was my fault.”
“Baby, today really was important business. Come out, and I’ll explain everything.”
Julian’s voice echoed through the empty house. He hurriedly took out his phone to call Phoenix.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is powered off. Please try again later.”
Refusing to give up, Julian called repeatedly, receiving the same response each time.
Returning to the living room, he noticed a box on the coffee table.
Julian rushed over, discovering a divorce certificate beside the box.
A divorce certificate? Whose divorce certificate?
Julian’s hands trembled as he opened it, seeing his and Phoenix’s names.
How
was this possible? When had he divorced Phoenix?
Julian thought back to recent events.
That document? The one he’d hastily signed without reading.
Julian was suddenly panicked, unable to understand why Phoenix would divorce him.
His attention was drawn to the box.
Julian anxiously wondered if this might be some prank of Phoenix’s–perhaps she was surprising him with a gift.
When Julian opened the box, the sight inside made his pupils dilate in shock, his mind going blank.
Inside was a five–month–old fetus preserved in formaldehyde.
Julian uncontrolled collapsed to his knees.
This was his child, his and Phoenix’s child.
Unable to control his emotions, he clutched the box and sobbed.

Chapter 9
The memory of Phoenix announcing her pregnancy seemed just yesterday.
“Julian, I have wonderful news.”
Phoenix had stood on tiptoe, covering his eyes from behind.
“What surprise do you have for me, baby? Being so mysterious?”
Julian played along, letting her slowly guide him toward the living room.
“Ta–da! I’m pregnant!”
Phoenix held up an ultrasound printout in front of Julian.
Julian embraced Phoenix excitedly. “We’re having a baby! I’m going to be a father!”
Julian couldn’t help but reach out to touch his child through the glass jar.
The joy he’d felt then wasn’t fake. His anticipation for this child’s birth wasn’t fake either.
Over these months, he and Phoenix had filled the entire nursery with everything their baby would need, big and small.
Julian couldn’t understand why Phoenix would be so heartless–heartless enough to terminate their five–month–old baby just to leave him.
“Why? Why would you leave me?” he sobbed.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Elise, seeing Julian hadn’t opened the door for some time, entered the passcode herself and walked in.
“How did you get in?” Julian demanded.
Elise paused, “The password is still the one you used when we were together.”
Julian said nothing as Elise approached him.
“Julian, what’s wrong?”
Julian’s face remained grim, offering no reply.
Elise glimpsed the jar on the coffee table, saw the child inside, and screamed in horror.
“Shut up!”
Julian’s command made Elise immediately cover her mouth.
Elise lowered her head, avoiding looking at the jar. “Julian, Phoenix has…”
Before she could finish, Julian cut her off.

“Get out.”
Elise clutched her purse strap tightly. “Julian, I just came to check on you”
But Julian acted as if he couldn’t hear her. “GET OUT!”
