Chapter 12
Alexander’s smile froze in place.
He opened his mouth to say something, but someone else brushed his hand off my
shoulder.
A man I didn’t recognize stepped forward with a warm smile.
“You must be Professor Foster’s TA,” he said.
“I’m Ethan Blake–your senior.”
I remembered the name. My advisor had mentioned him.
Ethan worked in a lab overseas and had just returned to join the project.
“I’ve read your work. Always wanted to meet you.”
“With your help, this project will be even stronger.‘
I nodded politely and moved a few steps away from Alexander, standing beside Ethan.
“Lillian, don’t be like this. Everyone’s watching,” Alexander whispered, reaching out.
I pulled back.
“Careful. Miss Charlotte’s still over there watching too.”
“Technically, the divorce isn’t final yet.”
“Wouldn’t want to give anyone the wrong idea.”
“You’ve got some nerve.”
Ethan suddenly clapped his hands, startling me.
“She’s right,” he said cheerfully.

“Divorced men should be seen and not heard–like corpses.”
Ethan was a big deal in the research world.
Everyone at the table wanted him on the project, so no one dared challenge him.
Alexander just stood there, stunned.
Even when Charlotte came over and tugged on his sleeve, he didn’t move.
Dinner was awkward as hell.
But at least we got the business side done.
When the event ended, Alexander ditched Charlotte and came after me.
His lips moved, but none of his usual charm came out.
“Are you heading back to the lab? I’ll give you a ride.”
Before I could say no, Ethan stepped in.
“No need. We’ve got work to do tonight–perfect timing, actually.”
Apparently, the word “tonight” hit a nerve.
“You’re spending the whole night with him?” Alexander snapped.
I hadn’t planned on it, but I nodded anyway.
“We’re still married!” he barked.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Funny. You and Charlotte were out on your little dates when we were still married, too.”
“That was business.”
“So is this.”

I said calmly, tugged Ethan’s sleeve, and walked away with him.
A few minutes later, the sky opened up.
Rain poured down.
I didn’t look back.
I don’t know if Alexander was still standing there.
But I didn’t hear his footsteps follow.
