CHAPTER 55 Kylie’s failed attempt
CHAPTER 55–Kylie’s failed attempt
KYLIE’S POV
I placed a hand over my racing heart once Elijah was gone. Bravado, that’s all it was, when I asked him to leave a moment ago Nothing but sheer bravado, had me locking the door against Elijah. Because when he was gone, I slid against the door and tried to still the trembling
I know what I had seen out there in the woods, even though Elijah tried to convince me to forget all about it
Beasts. They were beasts, who were first men. And what struck me as worse, was that Elijah had been there right after. Did that make him one of the beasts too?
I placed my hands on my temples and began to rock forward and backward. What the hell was happening around me? And how did Elijah connect to all of it? Because he knew something. The very fact that he was hell bent on me staying away proved that much. But what if I was right, and he was a part of it as well?
I needed to know. I simply needed to know
Sure, a part of me screamed to stay away from Elijah. But a greater part, a more dominant part, a voice that could not be stilled, pushed me to find out what I needed to find out.
I got up from the ground, my tremors finally subsiding, and went to my phone. There was a series of tests that football players had to take before every big game. Aptitude tests, physical tests, and health checks.
I was on the health team, but if I was able to get someone on the physical tests team to switch with me, then I was going to be able to try out Elijah’s reflexes. If he was simply like the rest of us, then his reflexes were bound to be normal, but if he wasn’t like I knew he wasn’t, then things would be different.
In a couple of minutes, I was able to find someone to switch roles with me, now all I had to do was wait. Wait till the test day, and set up my hurdles for Elijah. By the time I was done, there was no way in hell that he was going to keep denying or downplaying things. I was going to see him for what he was.
On the day of the Tests for his game, I found him in the school gym, doing warm–ups with his teammates. We had eye contact, and if for a moment there, he was surprised to find me in the physical test team, he did not show it. Instead, he kept jogging with his teammates, barking out orders as they did.
I couldn’t take my eyes off him, perhaps because neither could he take his eyes off me, and we were both in sync.
“Focus, Kylie, Focus. We got to select the teammates we wanted to test, and do so Separately chose Elijah and three orders, and no one disagreed. In any case, I was ready to fight anyone who wanted to.
“Elijah!” I called him forward as my first teammate, and he walked toward me with a raised brow.
“aren’t you supposed to be at the vital signs table?” he asked, and I simply rolled my eyes at him.
“I wanted to try this.” I said and pointed at the dodge balls, “I’ll throw those at you and you’re supposed to catch them. Do your best, as the results decide whether they let you play in the next game or not.”
“That’s a new test,” he said with a raised brow and I shrugged.
“It’s what I was asked to add. They need tougher players.”
“or maybe they need faster ones.”
“maybe.” I replied, and picked up two balls, “Ensure that you catch them while I throw them, okay?”
“gotcha. ” HE caught the first two with such ease and precision, and I was not surprised, but I increased my speed with the balls. Eventually, he stopped and looked at me with a raised brow.
“What are you on, Kylie?”
“I don’t understand what you mean, Elijah,” I said and passed the ball I held in one hand to another.
“You know exactly what I mean, Kylie,” he said, and picked up one of the balls, before inching close to me, so that he was only a breath away, and I sucked in a breath of my own.
“Be careful, Kylie. You might end up finding something that might be too much to handle.”
I pressed my lips together, and took a step back, before looking at him square in the eyes, “I’ll find what I need to find, Elijah. Seeing as you’re refusing to tell me the truth I need to know.”
Without another word, I walked to my table and ticked his name, “Your session is over, you can leave. You passed your test.” He walked to my table and placed both hands on the table, “some would say that I did a bit too well.” he said and my head shot up to look at him, “Or don’t you think so?”
“your session. Is over.” I repeated to ground teeth, and he said nothing else, just smiled, as he turned away.

CHAPTER 55–Kylie’s failed attempt
Gosh, he was infuriating!
ELIJAH’S POV
I suppose I should have known she was up to something from the moment I noticed that switched tears. She had decided to take to checking my reflexes. I suppose my beta was right about her digging to find out things about my kind. How else could she have known that we were impossibly fast? Why else would she have found the need to check?
Oh Kylie, if she would just give me some time, just be patient with me, then I would give her the truth she so adamantly sought.
But at the time, whatever truth she discovered could get her in trouble. She was already hard to keep safe with all the late- night rendezvous she made to the school lab.
And yes, I followed her. Always. I know my beta had said he would get some men to do so, but I didn’t think anyone would keep Kylie safe the way I would. After all, I loved her, they did not.
After practice, and the tests were done, I hit the shower and packed up my gym bag. Kylie was already gone by the time ! was done, but that was fine. The other men could and would keep up with her.
“Hi, Elijah!” I stilled at the sound of the voice and slowly turned to find Lisa smiling up at me. I tried to find a polite answer of my own, but it fell short. After all, she was part of the reason Kylie and I were this way. But I couldn’t fully blame her. I had chosen to save her that night.
“Hi, Lisa. Hope you are well.” I said and began to turn away. Kylie had left, but the last thing I needed was for her to come back and find me here with Lisa.
“I was wondering..” she said, walking to keep step with me and I wanted to lose it. Couldn’t she take the hint that I didn’t want to be around her?
“I was wondering if you’d want to hang out with me after your big game on Friday night ?”
I sighed and responded as politely as I could manage, “No, Lisa, I don’t think I want to do that. After that game, I want nothing more than to have pizza and call it a night.”
“Then we can do it together,” she suggested and I spared her a glance.
“I’d rather do it with, Kylie if I’m being honest,” I said and just kept moving, thankful that she didn’t follow this time.
