KYLIE’S POV
“oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” I found myself chanting underneath my breath, as I placed a hand over my racing heart.
“Kylie, get inside!” the sculpture emphasized, grabbing me by my hand, but I shook my head. What was unfolding before me made me petrified, but I could not find the willpower to leave just yet.
“what… are those?” I asked, almost in a trancelike manner, and suddenly felt a strong grip around my wrist.
“the very things that will kill you if I don’t get you the hell out of here.” and turned to find Elijah looking at me, his eyes wide and searching.
“Elijah?” But what was he doing here? And how did he know to be there right then?
“Let’s get you inside,” he said, in a tone that left very little room for contradictions.
I spared a glance in the direction of the fighting figures, but they were gone. How was that even possible? They were there,
a moment ago. And if you ask me, they were too caught up in their fight to have been gone in just a couple of seconds. And just at the very moment Elijah came to?
“What are you doing here?” I asked, when we got to my door, while I fumbled through my backpack for my keys.
“Let me help you with that,” he said, and took my bag from me, choosing to help with looking for my keys.
“You didn’t answer me. What are you doing here, Elijah? How are you even here, right now?”
He still did not respond, instead, he opened the door and made way for me to go through. By this time, the sculpture was gone. He probably trusted Elijah to handle things well.
“What other reason would there be for me being here than the very fact that I came to see you?”
“right now? At this hour? With what just took place in the woods? Are you aware that those beasts stopped fighting and disappeared at the very moment you arrived? Coincidence?”
He sighed and shook his head, “For your own good, Kylie… I’m going to have to ask that you forget about what you just saw.” “Well that’s going to be difficult, seeing as I saw what I saw, and it’s very well etched in my memory.”
“then unmemorise it. Because if you go around discussing that you saw two beasts out fighting in the woods? At best, people will think you’re crazy, but at worst? You could get killed.” he said the last statement so flatly that I had to take a step back.
But then something hit me.
“then you know something. If you know I could get hurt from seeing all of that, then you definitely know something. Tell me, Elijah. Tell me what you know.”
“forget about it, Kylie. Please. It’s just common sense to avoid trouble right now.”
“Fine and good, I can and will avoid it, but you need to at least let me know what I am actually avoiding.”
“Kylie.” he stated, and walked toward me, placing the palm of his hands on my cheek, “Please let it go.”
I inhaled and exhaled, before I finally and firmly shook my head, “No.”
“Excuse me?”
“I said no,” I said and stepped out of his reach.
“the thing happened around my apartment. I know what I saw, and I am going to get to the bottom of it, with or without your help.”
ELIJAH’S POV
It really was a coincidence that I found Kylie when those rogues were in a fight, and I swear for a moment there, my heart leaped out of my chest.
But she was safe now, but for how long?
Because between the rogues going closer and closer to where she loved, and the very fact that Kylie wanted to know more than was good for her, she was not as safe as I would have loved for her to be.
And she definitely was not making things easy for me with how stubborn she was choosing to be about the whole thing.
“I can’t keep you safe if you don’t do your part, Ky.”
“Okay then, but keep me safe from what? From what, Elijah? That’s all I need to know.”
“from… everything.”

“Well, that’s not ambiguous” she scoffed and I sighed,
“I’m just trying to help.”
“you want to help? Do you really want to help? Then how about you simply leave me alone? Go away, just go home. I’m inside now, and I am safe. You don’t have to worry anymore.”
Oh, but I did worry. As long as those rogues kept coming closer and closer, I was always going to worry. But she wanted to be left alone, and I was not going to push it.
“Fine then.” I said and stilled myself against the disappointment of her asking me leave, if you want me to leave, then so be it. But lock your doors.” I said as I began to turn away.
“Goodbye Elijah,” she said before she closed the door behind and I blew out a cleansing breath. Before leaving, I scanned the woods where those beasts had been fighting to see if any more rogues were there. Part of me hoped I would find one. At least then, I could put him in his place, a sign and a warning to the others. But I didn’t see it.
But not so long ago, they had been there, just when Kylie was outside too.
And kylie…
She was being so stubborn and adamant about the whole thing, but I still needed to make sure she was kept safe at all times, because the very thought of something happening to her all but terrified me.
Back at home, I found my beta and told him the situation.
“rogue activity, so close to Kylie’s apartment.” I said and was pacing, “so close, damn it!” I barked and had to fight the urge to toss a bottle against a wall.
“Is she okay?” he asked, seeming a little concerned and I nodded angrily.
“for now. But what do I do the next time there are rogues close to her home and I’m not there? We need to do something. and fast. Because I truly think these guys are out for her, and I am not okay with it. Not even in the slightest.”
“I know, I understand what you mean, and we will get to the bottom of it!”
“Now, damn it. I need something to be done now! I can’t lose Kylie.”
“I promise that I’ll do everything I can. But maybe for now we can hire some men to keep watch. Just some casual–looking folks that she would never suspect.”
I nodded slowly as the idea took form in my head.
“Alright then, not bad. But we have to do something about the rogues. They are increasing and are getting bolder if you ask
me.”
“I will. I’m working on it.” he said and brought out his phone, “but let me make the calls to the men who will watch over Kylie.” “do it then. Her protection right now is all that matters.
